The effect of lattice defects on the tribological behavior for low friction coefficient under lubricant was investigated in the nanostructured steels produced by heavy plastic deformation processes. In the surface-nanostructured SUJ2 bearing steel, the stable tribological behavior with low friction coefficient was observed in the ball-on-disk tests under PAO (Poly-α-Olefin 17) - oil or ester - oil, in comparison with the non-deformed steel. This phenomenon was enhanced by using the lubricant with polarity (ester - oil). In addition, the similar phenomenon was observed in the ULC (ultra-low carbon) steel with high-density of lattice defects (grain boundary, dislocation and so on). This reason seems that the molecules of lubricant interacted strongly with the nanostructured surface due to the deviation of electrons (polarization) at the region with high-density of lattice defects.

To obtain a general cooling transformation kinetics of steels from its isothermal transformation kinetic data, a bainite transformation has been investigated in present study. The main results obtained are as follows:(1) The isothermal transformation behaviour of bainite for the steel used in present investigation (JIS, SUJ2) can be expressed by the Johnson-Mehl type equation.(2) The bainite trasformation is retarded with an increase in the austenite grain size. The nucleation site of bainite is mainly on austenite grain surface but some homogeneous nucleations in the matrix are also found.(3) The equation expressing the transformation bahaviour of bainite during continuous cooling has been derived from the experimentally obtained isothermal transformation kinetics. It is examined that this equation well expresses the actual continuous cooling transformation behaviour.(4) The above result showing that additivity rule for transformed fraction is hold for bainite transformation during continuous cooling and cooling transformation behaviour can weell be predicted using the isothermal transformation kinetics.

The surface nanocrystallization of various steels by air blast shot peening was investigated. It was found that nanocrystalline layers can be produced when higher shot speed and longer process period than those of conventional shot peening were applied. The produced nanocrystalline layers are several μm thick and show extremely high hardness. The layers have clear boundaries with the adjacent work-hardened regions. By annealing, slow grain growth without recrystallization is observed in the layers. Those characteristics are similar to those observed in the nanocrystalline layers produced by other techniques, such as ball milling, ball drop and particle impact deformations.
