An image database of the Japanese weevils (excluding Scolytidae and Platypodidae), which was awarded the Akitu Prize 2008 by the Entomological Society of Japan, is introduced. The database site consists of the following eight pages: 1) home about the database; 2) comments on weevils; 3) image search; 4) text search; 5) collecting records plotted on Google Maps; 6) checklist; 7) images in nature, and 8) photo collage. The pages 3 to 8 are linked by a relationship with the keyword of the species name. Species information includes scientific and Japanese names, systematic position (family, subfamily, tribe and subtribe), distribution, host or collected plants, body length, synonym, notes, original description, collecting records and images including type specimens.

「外殻の形状情報と高精細でフォトリアリスティックなテクスチャ情報、および内部の構造情報を有した小型実物体の3次元コンピュータモデルを短時間に生成可能とする」ことが本研究の目的である。この目的を実現するために、X線CT装置と超広視野顕微鏡などの画像計測装置を利用した装置開発を行った。本研究成果を用いて作成したコンテンツは実際に多数のミュージアムで使用されており、本研究の有効性を示すことにも成功している。
