In this paper, we have discussed Japanese language textbook for the second period among those compiled and published over three periods by Hawaii Kyoikukai (Educational Association) after World War ll.We have sorted out Japanese language textbook for the second period based on official records of Hawaii Kyoikukai. As a result, it has been clarified regarding the following items:(1) Situation from planning to completion of Japanese language textbook for the second period;(2) Status of remaining bibliography and characteristics of the contents of Japanese language textbook for the second period;(3) Environment where Japanese language textbook for the second period was used; and(4) Points subsequently indicated to be required for improvementJapanese language textbook for the postwar second period is not evaluated well as a material to teach Japanese as a foreign language. The reason is that compiling method of Hisaharu Kugimoto was intended to create a national language textbook for native Japanese children. However, Kugimoto is not solely responsible for the result. Hawaii Kyoikukai which had made a request of the compilation also did not have any clear answer for what was necessary for shifting learning of Japanese as a mother tongue to that as a foreign language. Interactions regarding Japanese language textbook for the postwar second period between Kugimoto and Hawaii Kyoikukai should be interpreted as a case example showing how difficult it was for teachers as a native Japanese speaker to cope with the rapid change occurred in native language on students' side.Besides, Japanese language textbook for the postwar second period is now out of print completing its role as a Japanese language textbook. However, this textbook is available for research of Japanese language education history because it is possible to highlight difference between national language education and Japan education by comparing it with other textbook. We have planned to make comparison of the following items as our research subjects in the future:(1) Comparison with "spoken language" for which Hisaharu Kugimoto was involved in its compilation in 1940's;(2) Comparison with elementary school national language textbook (Osaka Shoseki Co., Ltd.) for which Hisaharu Kugimoto was involved in its compilation in 1950's;(3) Comparison with Japanese language textbook for the postwar first period in 1950's;(4) Comparison with Japanese language textbook for the postwar third period compiled by Jiho Machida et al. in 1980's; and(5) Comparison with textbooks ("Minna No Nihongo", etc.) which are mainstream of current Japanese language education.
