This paper aims to study of "Jyoui" on the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, based on British records. The shogunate signed the trade agreements with five countries in 1858 (Ansei Commercial Treaties). Since then, Japanese people came to demand to exclude foreigners ("Jyoui"). In 1861, the Tozenji that was a temporary English legation was attacked by Japanese warriors. As a result, the shogunate could not help ordering excluding foreigners from feudal lords. It was the only Choshu clan that obeyed it and attacked foreign ships in 1863. In despite of the fact, the Choshu clan sent five people to England in order to study Western technology at the same year. In this paper, an analysis from point of view of Britain has been made on British records with the aim of clarifying "Jyoui".

On this paper, I considered the political concept of Kido Takayoshi in order to reveal when he planed for the Tobaku. He intended that the war between Tokugwa shogunate and Choshu-Han prevented Tokugawa shogunate from recovering his authority. After the War, he required Tokugawa shogunate to return administrative power to the imperial court. He designed that the nation united around the imperial court in pressure of foreign countries. A result of consideration, this paper revealed, although he did not plan for the Tobaku, he planed to eliminate Tokugawa shogunate for achieving the Oseifukko.

This paper aims to make it clear that there are common and different points of descriptions of textbooks Japanese History A for high school students. On the educational system of Japan, the textbooks, which are authorized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, are provided by several publishing companies. These textbooks, which are written based on some different theories of historical study, could have differences in descriptions depending on the publishing companies. In fact, we have various theories concerning the formation process of the modern nation, for example, some theories of diplomatic relationships between Japan and European countries at that time. Therefore, this paper explains these common and different points with concrete examples by comparative analysis of the descriptions of each textbook. The outcome could contribute to history education for high school students.

In 1864, the Tokugawa Shogunate commanded several clans to attack the Choshu Clan, because the Choshu was considered to have rebelled against the Emperor with the incident at Kinmon. In Shikoku, the Uwajima Clan and the Takamatu Clan were slow to prepare sending troops. The Choshu apologized presently, so the Tokugawa Shogunate stopped his attack. In 1865, the Tokugawa Shogunate decided to attack the Choshu again, because the Shogunate had maintained his authority. The Matsuyama Clan sent troops to Oshima, the eastern part of the Choshu Clan, but the Uwajima Clan tried to avoid sending troops. This was an active sign that the Shogunate's absolute power was declining.

In 1864, the Tokugawa shogunate ordered feudal lords to send their troops to the Choshu Clan. In 1866, the war between the Tokugawa forces and the Choshu clan finally broke out. British ministers to Japan communicated with some Choshu retainers several times during the two years.
