Enzymes, which catalyze a variety of reactions in living systems, have many specific features, such as regiospecificity, stereospecificity and substrate specificity. Furthermore, such reactions can be carried out under very mild conditions. Immobilization of biocatalysts (enzymes, and enzymecontaining organelles, microbial cells and other living systems) is attracting worldwide attention, because immobilized biocatalysts catalyze biochemical reactions under more stabilized conditions than their free counterparts and, moreover, they can be reused economically. At present, applications of immobilized biocatalysts include (a) production of useful compounds by stereospecific and/ or regiospecific reactions under mild conditions, (b) production of energy by biological processes, (c) analyses of various compounds with high sensitivity and high specificity, and (d) utilization in medical fields such as new types of drugs and artificial organs etc.This review deals with the several examples of immobilized biocatalysts applied to biosynthesis and bioconversion of organic compounds. Utilization of immobilized biocatalysts in the presence of organic solvents is also described.

During the acid cleaning of various equipments, one of the troubles frequently encountered is acid attack on construction materials. Therefore, care should be taken to protect the equipment from acid attack during acid cleaning.Although the acid attack on steel has been studied for many years, there seems to be very little study concerning the acid attack on copper alloys, because the corrosion rates of copper alloys are considered to be comparatively low in the non-oxidizing acid solutions such as hydrochloric acid.However, the acid solution containing oxidizing agents such as oxygen, ferric or cupric ion, etc. may cause attack.In this study, we have investigated the effects of acid concentration, temperature, gas atmosphere and oxidizing ions such as ferric or cupric ion on the corrosion of copper alloys in hydrochloric acid solutions.As a result, it has been found that in the presence of oxidizing ions, the inhibition effect of inhibitors is markedly decreased, and the corrosion rates of copper alloys are greatly accelerated in the inhibited hydrochloric acid solution.The tendency is more remarkable when air is bubbled through the solution.On the hand, in the absence of oxidizing ions, the corrosion of copper alloys in hydrochloric acid can be prevented by inhibitors even when air is bubbled through the solution.

In a preceding paper, the fundamental conditions necessary in experiments employing the Warburg manometric technique to study the stimulatory effect of activated sludge on methane fermentation were discussed.In this paper, an attempt was made to isolate the stimulatory factors for gas production in methane fermentation from an aqueous extract of activated sludge. Fractionation of factors was carried out with Amberlite IR 120 resin, activated charcoal and paper chromatographic techniques. Results obtained showed the existence of at least three effective factors. The effects of activated sluge on methane fermentation seemed to be a complex one involving unidentified brownish colored substance as an essential factor and a group of amino acids and purine derivatives, such as adenine and hypoxanthine, as supplement factors.
