With the objective of clarifying which performance indices are correlated with the outcome of the game for attacks following serve-reception in international men's volleyball tournaments, this study analyzed the 2015 Volleyball Men's World Cup. The results obtained are as follows. (1) Considering all attacks when in-system, and using each team's percentage of winning the set as the variable, very strong positive correlations were confirmed for the attack efficiency (r =0.948, p <.001) and kill attack percentage (r =0.902, p <.001). (2) Considering quick attacks when in-system, and using each team's percentage of winning the set as the variable, a very strong positive correlation was confirmed for the attack efficiency (r =0.787, p <.01) and kill attack percentage (r =0.711, p <.01), and a relatively strong negative correlation was confirmed for the percentage of losing points from an attack (r =-0.582, p <.05). (3) Considering pipe attacks when in-system, and using each team's percentage of winning the set as the variable, very strong positive correlations were confirmed for the kill attack percentage (r =0.876, p <.001) and attack efficiency (r =0.784, p <.01), and a relatively strong positive correlation was confirmed for the attack attempt percentage (r =0.629, p <.05). (4) Considering front side attacks when out-of-system, and using each team's percentage of winning the set as the variable, a relatively strong negative correlation was confirmed for the blocked attack percentage (r =-0.606, p <.05).From the above, it became clear that in terms of attacks following serve-reception at the 2015 Volleyball Men's World Cup, in-system attacks are correlated with the outcome of the game, especially with correlations found in the potency and accuracy of quick attacks, and the potency and frequency of pipe attacks. In addition, it was confirmed that for out-of-system front side attacks, the points lost due to being blocked by the opponent had a correlation with the outcome of the game.

The aim of this study was to enhance the game performance of player S, the setter for the Ts University men's volleyball team, who was having problems with respect to “using combination attacks purposefully to limit the number of blocks by the opposition”-which is one of the main responsibilities of the setter-by using the “Performance Evaluation Criteria for Setters”. In order to achieve this aim, we analyzed the game performance of player S for the fall season. Based on this analysis, we derived some goals for improvement that were required for combination attack setting.Next, we worked on theoretical issues in player S's game in the light of what we had clarified. This corrected combination attack setting method was then put into practice in the fall season league games. We then examined the game performance of player S in the fall and spring seasons, and compared the results. This analysis showed that, when setting for combination attacks, those in which the hitters do not cross paths and where the setter was in the front row with only two front row hitters had a significantly higher rate of compliance with the evaluation criteria in the fall season than in the spring season. It therefore followed that there was a significant increase in the rate of compliance with the evaluation criteria for all combination attacks. As a result, it can be concluded that this study's aim of improving the game performance of player S with respect to “using combination attacks purposefully to limit the number of blocks by the opposition,” using the “Performance Evaluation Criteria for Setters”, was successful.

In volleyball, a setter is the play-maker in the court, having the role of determining the offensive pattern and setting the ball in a combination attack in order to take the offensive in an advantageous situation. However, in volleyball matches in Japan, the situation is often observed where setting the ball does not seem to conform the objectives for the combination attack. This study, therefore, aims at presenting a valuation basis in order to evaluate setter's performance at the combination attack as a group tactics from the view point of ‘preparing an advantageous situation for the offensive’. In the volleyball matches between colleges on the top level in Japan, we classified typical combination attacks following the serve reception into 5 groups according to the shape of the hitter's approach and made the concrete objectives of each combination attack clear from the view point of ‘preparing an advantageous situation for the offensive’. Based on this, we theoretically derived the basis for the success in combination attacks, and presented a valuation basis for the evaluation of setter's performance.

This study focused on volleyball spike jump performance. We classified players based on different types of jumping ability and tested the effects of strength training and plyometrics for each type of ability. Players who excelled in their ability to acquire greater impulse (countermovement jump or CMJ type) showed no significant changes in spike jump height with strength training (improvement in maximum muscle strength), but demonstrated a significant improvement in jump height after plyometrics. In contrast, players with outstanding execution of ballistic movement (rebound jump or RJ type) showed a significant improvement in their spike jump height with strength training (an improvement in maximum muscle strength), but a significant loss of jump height after plyometrics. This reveals that the same training program results in players jumping lower or higher, depending on the jump type. When formulating training to improve the jump height of volleyball players, these results suggest that the type of training must be selected based on the individual player’s jumping ability.
