The Pulse Generators or PGs are equipped to detect the rotor frequency of induction traction motors for the torque control in railway vehicle traction field. Eliminating PGs are preferable from the view points of increasing the reliability of the traction system, reduction of the both initial and maintenance cost and down-sizing induction traction motors. Expecting those merits, we have been studying to apply a sensor less control method to induction traction motor control. Prior to some reports of studies and tests to apply speed sensor-less strategy to railway vehicle traction, we lunched the ideas to apply the speed sensor-less control strategy and results of the studies and the tests. In this paper, we present the novel control method for railway vehicle traction and some results of theoretical study and tests.

We have developed a Re-adhesion control algorithm of traction inverter without any Motor speed sensors. In this paper, we are focusing on anti-slip control performance of this system. The influence of speed estimation delay is considered and a method to improve the delay is shown. Acceleration performance of the proposed system is same level as the one of current drive systems using speed sensors.

For the better performance and/or the high speed running for electric rolling-stocks, high accuracy power factor control with PWM power converter fed by ac power line has become popular. It is practically easy to control actual power factor itself at the input point of the power converter on the rolling-stock, however, the more important is that at substations. Although there are some technical difficulties for detecting the correct voltage phase angle on the train, caused by, for example, interference from thyristor controlled converters, suitable target value for practical power factor can be calculated under reasonable conditions. Among some kinds of control concept, the instantaneous current control referring sinusoidal waveform is the most suitable solution for the Japanese Shinkansen. The test results proved the expected power factor control performance.

This paper is aimed at providing the designing method of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control system for the high-speed and the single-phase AC powered Gauge Changing Train (GCT). The state-of-the-art electrical motive unit is equipped with downsized direct drive type PMSMs for the simplified gauge changeable truck. Due to the feeding the AC single phase power, we propose a beat-less control for PMSMs. We verify the development results of designing procedures by the experimental results of operation on a high-speed test line in Colorado, USA.

A reduction in the power consumed by motors is required for energy saving in the case of electrical appliances and electric vehicles (EV). The motors used for operating these apparatus operate at variable speeds. Further, the motors operate with small load in stationary mode and with large load in start-up mode. A permanent magnet motor can operate at the rated power with a high efficiency. However, the efficiency is lower at small load or high speed because the large constant magnetic force results in substantial core loss. Furthermore, the flux-weakening current that depresses voltage at high speed leads to significant copper loss. Therefore, we have developed a new technique for controlling the magnetic force of permanent magnet on the basis of the load or speed of the motor. In this paper, we propose the novel motor that can vary magnetic flux and we clarify the principle.

Recently, with the progress of robust control techniques, the resonance of mechanical systems becomes a more important problem. This paper presents a position control method to suppress the torsional vibration of a 2 mass resonant system. Here we propose a sensorless control of arm portion. In this case, it is necessary to estimate some states of the arm portion. When motor portion parameters are well known due to several identifications, the reaction torque caused by the shaft torsion can be estimated. This reaction torque feedback makes it possible to control the resonance frequency between the torque current and the motor position. Here, we introduce a new concept which is called "Resonance Ratio". The resonance ratio is determined arbitrarily by the feedback of the reaction torque. The proposed method is a reasonable concept from a mechanical point of view.<br>The proposed control system is based on both the conventional PD control and the resonance ratio control. Then any sensor information of the arm portion is not used, and the proposed controller is a very simple structure. This is one of the remarkable points of the proposed method. We discuss an idea of the determination method of controller gains. The validity of the proposed method is also proved by several experiments.
