DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) technique is a direct approach to solve the Boltzmann equation. To simulate small scale phenomena of gas mixture close to molecular size, such as behavior of nano-particles, particle formation from gas, etc., DSMC technique was extended to the rarefied gas mixture. This advanced technique was applied to the fundamental problems, such as Rayleigh’s problem, velocity distribution of gas molecules in equilibrium gas mixture, and time-dependent change of distribution of diffused gas molecules. Simulated results using DSMC technique extended to gas mixture showed a good agreement with theories and previous studies. Also, characteristics of Bird-scheme and Nanbu-scheme which have been widely applied to treat collisions between molecules in DSMC method were studied. Finally, a practical problem, the deposition of sputtered molecule, was simulated, and this technique was proved to be a powerful tool for solving this sort of problems.

Hydrogen explosion tests were conducted to grasp nonlinear response and to get its fundamental data for reinforced concrete walls subjected to hydrogen explosive load. In the tests, an explosive source (37m^3 -volume) that contained 30% hydrogen and 70% air was detonated, and the responses of the walls close to the source were measured. Two preliminary and three main tests were conducted for a variety of wall types with different thickness, heights, and steel reinforcements. The walls were instrumented with pressure sensors, displacement sensors, strain gauges, accelerometers and thermocouple. Wide varieties of experimental data were obtained in damage ranging from elasticity to complete failure. It was also confirmed that the wall nonlinear response depends on the blast wave duration and initial natural period. With increasing the initial natural period, the higher vibration modes were appeared on the response of the walls. Furthermore effects of strain rate were quantitatively investigated on the basis of the test results.

Worldwide pandemic by COVID-19 still continues. Ventilation is recommended as one of the important measures against virus infection. However, if ventilation measures are taken in the wrong way, not only the measures can’t reduce the risk of infection, but also they may make increase it. The effect of ventilation as an infection control, how to determine the volume flow rate requirement, and the ventilation method for effective air exchange has been studied. Based on these results, how we should consider effective ventilation to reduce the risk of viral infections were discussed in this paper.

In the Internet data centers (iDCs), a large amount of heat generated by server machines should be removed efficiently from the server rooms so that the room temperature can be controlled at a suitable level to keep these machines in good working condition. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out for various air-conditioning systems, and the ventilation and air-conditioning performance were compared. As the result, systems with both supply and return openings on the ceiling showed the best performance. This system exhibited much better performance than any other conventional systems. In addition, it was flexible with regard to the arrangement of server racks, and it performed well even in case of large heat generation.
