Studies on Japanese textbooks in Korea have been focused on or limited to the high school textbooks for Japanese that are customarily chosen in accordance with the guidelines or curricula made by the Ministry of Education. The purpose of this paper, acknowledging such limitations, is to investigate the difference in vocabulary or lexicon used in the university textbooks for Japanese as part of general education to help students learn about Japan and Japanese. University textbooks unlike high school ones have no definite guidelines when selected, so as to make difference or irregularity with regards to vocabulary or lexicon. This paper compared and analyzed such difference of vocabulary based on a glossarial index of 1,023 basic words understood as a part of 2007 Revised Curriculum. The textbooks to be compared are being used in five national universities having a Japanese department. As a result, 54.1% is the highest rate for vocabulary agreement of textbook comparison while the least is 26.2%. It proves a great discrepancy in selecting and using textbook vocabulary.
