The test apparatus for cutting using a knife-edged cutter as cutlery is made. In the apparatus, cutting forces in two direction at various cutting speed can be measured continuously through cutting process. Tests which cutters made of two materials cut specimen of sweet potato are carried about various blade angles and edge angles. The results obtained are as follows : (1) Sweet potato is separated by propagation of crack caused by penetration of a cutter except the initiation. (2) Blade angle affects greatly the peak of cutting force and the cutting energy to separate specimen fully. But edge angle has no effect on them. (3) Increase of cutting speed decreases them greatly. (4) There is no effect of cutter material on cutting process.

Effects of silicon content are investigated on tensile properties and crack propagation behavior of Al-Si-Cu alloy die castings. The specimens are made by the low velocity shot die casting method. Silicon content of alloy is varied from 8.6 mass % to 15.4 mass %. The tensile strength and the elongation of hypo-eutectic Al-Si alloys are higher than those of hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloys. In the case of hypo-eutectic Al-Si-Cu alloys, a crack propagates through the eutectic phase in inter-dendrite region or α-Al dendrite. In the case of hyper-eutectic silicon alloy, the primary silicon acts as the origin of fracture because primary silicon crystallizes with facet planes. The crack mainly propagates through primary silicon grains or along eutectic silicon. Primary silicon particles tend to segregate in case of low velocity injection casting. This macro-segregation of primary silicon particles deteriorates the mechanical properties. Especially tensile strength decreases with increase of segregation.

Mechanical properties of sweet potato are examined experimentally by compressive tests. And the computer simulation is conducted using FEM, on the separating process that sweet potato is cut by a knife-edged cutter with flat blade. The results obtained are as follows : (1) The calculation result almost corresponds to the process which sweet potato is separated by the preceding crack caused by a cutter except initiation. (2) The variety of cutting force is also the same as the experiment on each blade angle of a cutter. (3) In calculation, the effect of blade angle on two factors, the peak of cutting force and the cutting energy, is similar to the experiment. But both calculated values are higher than the experiment due to the high frictional coefficient between the separated surface and a cutter, which is obtained by a simple frictional test.
