This study investigated a proposed structural model of the relationship between over-adaptation and depression in college students. This model assumed that: (1) self- and other-perception (self-insufficiency and cynicism) predict external over-adaptive behavior (self-inhibition and other-oriented behavior); and (2) over-adaptation predicts depression. A total of 260 Japanese college students (110 men and 150 women undergraduates) completed a questionnaire. The structural model was analysed through the structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicated that: (1) self-insufficiency predicted over-adaptive behavior positively (both men and women); (2) cynicism positively predicted self-insufficiency (both men and women) and self-inhibition (women only); and (3) depression was positively predicted directly by self-insufficiency (both male and female) and self-inhibition (male only). These results suggest that self-sufficiency and self-inhibition, i.e. psychological adaptation-relating variables, mainly affect depression. Finally, gender differences were discussed.

In this study, we developed the Over-Adaptation Scale-Relationship Specified (OAS-RS) for early adolescents. Additionally, we investigated different characteristics of over-adaptation towards parents, peers, teachers by examining their relationships with school adjustment and stress response, and classifying individuals based on their over-adaptation. Based on a pilot study and previous studies, the OAS-RS was developed, and 1180 Japanese junior high school students, completed the questionnaire. Factor analyses found six factors, and the correlation and Cronbach's α analyses showed that the OAS-RS had adequate validity and reliability. Additionally, this study revealed that OAS-RS scores were correlated with school adjustment and stress response, and differences in the OAS-RS scores with reference to gender and grade varied for each type of relationship. A cluster analysis revealed some clusters, which were interpreted as over-adaptation towards (a) parents, peers, and teachers, (b) parents, (c) peers, and (d) peers and teachers. Those who were over-adaptive at home (towards parents), at school (towards peers and teachers), and both (towards parents, peers, and teachers) showed lower adjustment, but those who exhibited over-adaption towards peers showed no differences in adjustment scores.

The present study is a review of "over-adaptation" in adolescence. In this study, the author reviewed the definitions and measures of over-adaptation, constructed a comprehensive model of overadaptation and its relevant factors, and clarified the trends and future directions of studies about overadaptation in adolescence. At first, this study clarified that there were many definitions and measures of over-adaptation by reviewing previous studies. Then, the author suggested two ways of understanding over-adaptation for the purpose of integrating knowledge of previous studies and making future studies accumulated more systematically. That is, one is (a) over-adaptation with internal maladjustment, and the other is (b) over-adaptation as a risk factor for internal maladjustment. Secondly, this study classified relevant factors of over-adaptation into two categories, (a) the factors explaining over-adaptation and (b) the ones affected by over-adaptation. In addition, explanatory factors of over-adaptation were classified into intrapersonal factors and interpersonal (environmental) ones. From this perspective, this study suggested that intrapersonal and interpersonal factors influenced over-adaptation and it was important to consider both factors to understand over-adaptation. Kazama & Hiraishi (submitted) considered that interaction of intrapersonal and interpersonal factors formed over-adaptation in relationships with parents, peers, and teachers, and developed Over-Adaptation Scale - Relationships Specified (OAS-RS) measuring the extent to which an individual engages to over-adaptive behavior in relationships with parents, peers, teachers, respectively. Like that, future studies may need to consider the diversity of over-adaptation in adolescence. Finally, this study showed that most previous studies were based on cross-sectional data. Then, longitudinal studies will be needed to investigate occurrence and developmental processes of overadaptation.
