The contrast of the vowel length in Modern Japanese results from the coalescence in Vu hiatuses as [iu][eu][au][ou], which changed into long vowels. This paper intends toexplain what factors were relevant to these changes. It presents two points as follows.(1) As a result of the above-mentioned changes, i) the indivisible units that had two morae, i.e. the long vowels, came to be established. ii) the syllable u came to be restricted to be at the initial positions of morphemes. These processes are worthy of notice from the functional point of view. They are regarded consonant with the trend, which has been already pointed out, of the phonological evolution in the history of Japanese language: that the delimitation of morphemes has been manifested by the phonotactic and tonal rearrangement resulting from several different changes.(2) The manner of changes in Vu and in Vi was conditioned by the phonetic nature of Vu and of Vi. Vu hiatuses were vulnerable to the changes into long vowels under the condition that the [j] follows all consonants except [w].

One of the main questions that deserves to be challenged is how the indigenous structure extended to SJ word formation, such as geminations, of which the earlier stage can be hardly attested by historical records. Another topic concerns vowel coalescence. The interesting interaction between SJ word types and Yamato accounts for these sound changes.

This article primarily surveys several phenomena that are derived from the asymmetry between CjV and CwV in the Japanese language: the historical processes of Sino-Japanese forms CjV and CwV, the vowel coalescences of Vu and Vi (iu, eu vs. ui, oi), the contracted forms having CjV, etc. Secondly, we discuss the relationship between the asymmetry of the two medial approximants j, w and the characteristics of the Japanese vowel system that give rise to another asymmetry between palatalization and labialization. Finally, we mention residual issues on the asymmetry of two medials, mimetic expressions having medial j and w, the history of the w-consonant, and so on.

近世初期における発音への関心の高まりに関する問題を中心に考察した。注目すべき点としては、五十音図の果たした役割である。五十音図はこの時期、謡曲の指南書にも多く引用されている。このことは,五十音図の普及,浸透という点から見て興味深い。すなわち,これが社会的により広く知られるようになったことを示している。しかし,謡曲においては,この当時に特有の五十音図の役割についてより具体的に明らかにする必要がある。その役割について考える上で問題となるのは,中世期から江戸期にかけて生じた諸々の音変化である。長母音の形成、四つ仮名の合流,あるいはさらにハ行子音の脱唇音化といった変化は,いずれも五十音図本来の枠組みから外れる方向を持つ。そのため,当時の知識人たちは,現実の発音と五十音図とのズレに正面から向き合わざるを得なかった。しかし,現実の発音と仮名との関係を知る上で,五十音図を座標に据えると便利である。それとのズレによって体系的な把握が可能になるからである。とくに,謡曲のようにその発音法に独特の伝承を持つ場合には,その発音法を理解する上で五十音図は必要なものであった。五十音図をあらかじめ頭の中に入れておくことによって,どこに注目すればよいかを組織立てて理解することができる。「いろは」しか持ち合わせていないとそのような理解に到達するのは容易ではない。また,当時,五十音図はさほど特殊な存在ではなく,知識層一般にとって受容可能なものになっていたからこそこのように利用できたのであろう。蜆縮涼鼓集をはじめとして,言語音そのものに対する関心が高まった社会的背景に,上述のように五十音図が重要な役割を持って使われていたことが挙げられる。また,別の問題として,近世期の状況を理解するためには、漢語の問題も重要であり、漢語の音韻的特徴についての考察は本課題の研究を今後深めるためにさらに必要になる。
