The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to examine the actual circumstances of involvement in gambling, and (b) to investigate the relationships between levels of the gambling problem and the Big Five personality traits among Japanese adults. Nine hundred Japanese adults were asked to complete a web-based questionnaire to measure their levels of involvement in gambling and personality traits. The results indicated that approximately 47% of the participants had engaged in gambling before. In addition, a positive relationship was observed between levels of gambling involvement and Neuroticism, while Agreeableness and Conscientiousness were negatively related to levels of gambling involvement.

Effects of winning versus losing on the resulting gambling behavior and the relationships with affects were experimentally investigated in healthy undergraduates. Participants (N=20) performed the Game of Dice Task that consisted of 18 gambling trials. Participants played the game twice (Sessions 1 and 2), and their positive and negative affects were measured before Session 1, between Sessions 1 and 2, and after Session 2. Result indicated that participants shifted their gambling choice to be more reckless, after they had experienced wins than losses. In addition, positive affect between Sessions 1 and 2 was positively correlated with reckless gambling in both Session 1 and 2. It is suggested that the effects of winning versus losing and affect are both important for understanding the basic mechanisms of gambling behavior.

This study investigated the relationship between gambling addiction and the Dark Triad among Japanese adult gamblers. The study participants were 360 Japanese adult gamblers. They were asked to complete an online questionnaire measuring their Dark Triad traits and the level or degree of their gambling addiction. The results showed that Machiavellianism and narcissism were correlated with gambling addiction among men, whereas psychopathy was correlated with gambling addiction among both men and women. These results are partially consistent with those of previous studies conducted with Western samples.

This study investigated the relationship between problem gambling levels and mindfulness among Japanese adults. A web-based questionnaire was administered to 1505 Japanese adults to measure their problem gambling and mindfulness levels. The results indicated a negative relationship between problem gambling and mindfulness levels. Further, the possibility of using mindfulness for the prevention and treatment of problem gambling is discussed.

Effects of winning versus losing, emotional states, and perceived luck on gambling behavior were experimentally examined among Japanese undergraduates. Participants (21 males and 21 females) performed a Game of Dice Task that consisted of 18 gambling trials. Their emotional states and perceived luck were assessed before the first trial and after every trial. The results indicated that after participants experienced wins, compared to losses, their emotional state became more positive and aroused, and their perceived luck increased. Additionally, their next gambling choice became more cautious after participants experienced losses, compared to wins with cautious gambling. These results suggest that the effects of winning versus losing are significant for understanding the mechanisms of gambling behavior.

The current study investigated the effects of gambling-irrelevant positive emotions and gambling-irrelevant perceived luck on gambling behavior. Participants performed a Game of Dice Task(GDT) comprising 18 trials. Their emotional states and perceived luck in relation to the game were assessed before the first trial and, subsequently, after every trial. In an effort to trigger their emotions, participants were shown film clips before performing the GDT; perceived luck was induced through "lucky" draws for which, unbeknown to the participants, the results were controlled. The results indicated that participants among whom positive emotions and perceived luck were induced, gambled more recklessly after winning consistently, rather than losing. Further, after initially gambling with seemingly even chances of winning, participants gambled less recklessly, despite their induction with both positive emotions and perceived good luck. However, after reckless gambling, positive emotions and perceived good luck had no significant effect on subsequent gambling behavior.
