An immature cymothoid isopod was found infesting a serranid fish, Sacura margaritacea (Hilgendorf, 1879) (Perciformes: Serranidae), captured off Hiratsuka (Kanagawa Prefecture) in the Sagami Bay along the Pacific coast of central Japan. In molecular analyses, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA sequences of the cymothoid specimen shared ≥99% identity with those of Ceratothoa oxyrrhynchaena Koelbel, 1878 in GenBank. The produced anterolateral margins of pereonite 1 and the well-expanded carina at the posterior margin of pereopod 7 basis in the present specimen were in close agreement with the diagnostic characteristics of adult of C. oxyrrhynchaena, corroborating the results of molecular analyses. This finding represents a new host record of C. oxyrrhynchaena.

Cinusa nippon Nagasawa(Isopoda: Cymothoidae), a marine parasite infesting the buccal cavities of coastal puffers, is newly recorded from the Pacific coasts of central Japan. A pair consisting of a mature female and mature male, and six mancae and a juvenile, were collected from reared vermiculated puffer, Takifugu snyderi(Abe)(Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae), in an aquarium and a museum, respectively. The present paper provides a description of the morphological characters of these cymothoids, including their immature stages, and molecular analysis using 16S rRNA for C. nippon and related species. In the maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree, C. nippon was included in the clade of Ceratothoa Dana and corresponds to Ceratothoa sp. 2 reported in another study. These suggest that the relationship between Cinusa Schioedte and Meinert and Ceratothoa needs to be re-examined. Furthermore, the morphological study showed that these cymothoid mancae are similar to Manca type 2 known from zoo-plankton, provided in one of our previous reports.

A total of 42 specimens of aegathoid stage, immature of cymothoid isopod (Crustacea), were investigated on the basis of sample collected by a shore seine from the coast of Katase (Fujisawa, Kanagawa Pref.), inner part of Sagami Bay, Pacific coast of central Japan, on 24 October 2015. There were identified as Nerocila phaiopleura Bleeker, 1857. The morphological characters of them were similar to descriptions and illustrations of that of previous records. The relationship of body length and maximum body width of all specimens of aegathoid stage of N. phaiopleura collected through in our previous studies on Japanese cymothoid isopods including present study are regressed to linear equation with high correlation coefficient. These isopod specimens could be separated to three other groups by distribution frequency of their body lengths: 1st group, 8 specimens, 8.1–11.9 mm BL; 2nd group, 43 specimens, 13.5–18.0 mm BL; 3rd group, 1 specimen, 20.4 mm BL.

In Japan, 111 species (including 11 unidentified taxa) of epicaridean isopods have so far been recorded. All species are parasites, infesting various crustacean hosts, such as Decapoda, Ostracoda, Cirripedia, Mysidacea, and etc. Their larvae are known from ectoparasites of pelagic copepods. In the present paper, 121 species of crustacean hosts of epicaridean isopods are listed (1 species of Ostracoda, 8 of Copepoda, 1 of Balanomorpha, 1 of Rhizochephala, 2 of Mysidacea, 11 of Penaeidea, 33 of Caridea, 1 of Astacidea, 5 of Thalassinidea, 27 of Anomura, 30 of Brachyura, and 1 of unknown taxa).

During a faunal survey of the intertidal mud flat of Shinhama Lagoon on the northern coast of Tokyo Bay, parasitic bopyrid isopods, Ione cornuta Spence Bate, were found attached to the inner walls of the branchial chambers of ghost shrimps, Nihonotrypaea japonica (Ortmann). In this isopod, the females are parasites of N. japonica whereas dwarf males attach to conspecific females. To investigate the prevalence of the parasite I. cornuta, sampling of ghost shrimps was conducted every 2 to 4 weeks at the Shinhama Lagoon during the periods from August, 1994, to October, 1995, and January, 1998, to May, 1999. A total of 328 individuals (253 females, 62 males, and 13 of unknown sex) of N. japonica was collected, and 22 individuals among them (6.7%) were infected with I. cornuta. Among the infected shrimps, females accounted for 21 individuals, and only one male was infected. This skewed sex ratio is considered to simply reflect the female-biased sex ratio of this species in the field. In most cases, one individual of the parasite I. cornuta was attached within the left or the right branchial chamber of each host shrimp. No significant relationship was detected between the handedness of the major cheliped of the host shrimps and the attachment position of I. cornuta. A significant positive correlation was found between the size of the host shrimps and the size of mature females (i.e., those with brood chambers) of the parasite; however, the size of immature parasites was not correlated with the size of their host shrimp. In spite of the long sampling periods during this study, no ovigerous shrimp infected by I. cornuta was collected. This strongly suggests that infection by I. cornuta negatively affects the reproduction of the host female shrimps.
