[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an intensive sensorimotor stimulation program on the motor function of chronic hemiparetic patients. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were three chronic stroke patients whose sensory function was intact, who had Mini-Mental State Examination − Korean version scores of more than 26, and manual muscle test scores of more than fair for affected shoulder and elbow. The research design was an A-B single subject experimental design. The intervention consisted of 4 baselines phase sessions, and 12 sensorimotor stimulation phase sessions. The sensory and motor stimulation was performed for 30 minutes per session. The efficacy of the program was evaluated by the Box and Block test, and the 10-second test. [Results] Box and Block test and 10-second test scores of each subject improved after the 8 weeks intervention. [Conclusion] The intensive sensorimotor stimulation program for the upper extremity may be an efficacious method for improving the function of the affected limb of chronic stroke patients.

Cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) is a heme-containing mono-oxygenase involved in metabolism of environmental contaminants. Two variants of dog CYP1A1 with a single residue difference were identified and designated Sap1 and Sap2. Compared with Sap1, Sap2 had a Trp50Leu substitution. The biochemical characteristics of the variants were comparatively analyzed using heterologous expression in Escherichia coli. The membrane fraction of E. coli expressing Sap2 exhibited higher CYP holoprotein and heme contents than the Sap1-containing membranes, although the level of total CYP1A1 protein (i.e., apoprotein + holoprotein) was comparable between the groups. As normalized to holo-CYP content, the Sap2-expressing membranes showed lower CYP1A1-specific enzyme activities, such as 7-ethoxyresorufin O-dealkylation (EROD), than the Sap1 group. In single substitution variants of residue 50, proteins with hydrophobic residues having mass similar to Leu exhibited lower EROD activities than those with hydrophobic residues having larger mass than Leu. In addition, variants with polar or charged residues having mass similar to Leu showed activities that were comparable to those of Sap2. Taken together, these findings suggest that the Trp50Leu substitution leads to an enhancement of holo-CYP1A1 formation, but diminishes the enzyme activity because of the small size of Leu compared with Trp.

In this study, a 2 inch sized a highly periodic nanometer-scaled patterned sapphire substrate (NPSS) was fabricated using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) and inductively coupled plasma etching to improve the light-extraction efficiency of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Both truncated cone and cone shape patterns were fabricated on the sapphire substrate to compare the enhancement effect of light extraction efficiency of LEDs according to the shape of sapphire patterns. A blue LED structure was grown on the two different NPSS, and the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) were measured to confirm the effectiveness of the two different nanometer-scaled patterns on sapphire. An improvement in luminescence efficiency was observed when NPSS was applied; 2 times stronger PL intensity and 2 times stronger EL intensity than the LED structure grown on the un-patterned sapphire substrate was measured. These results show highly periodic nanometer-scaled patterns create multi-photon scattering and effectively enhance the light-extraction efficiency of LEDs.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to analyze the activity engagement of the retiree population in South Korea. [Methods] The Korean-Activity Card Sort (K-ACS) was used to collect research data. A One-way ANOVA and post-hoc comparisons showed significant group effects among three age groups. The independent t-tests was used to analyze the differences in mean retained level of activity (MRA) between men and women. [Results] The one-way ANOVA showed statistically significant differences in MRA among different age groups. Scheffé’s test revealed a statistically significant decrease in MRA in Group A, aged more than 75 years, as compared to the other two age groups. When participants were divided by gender, MRA of instrumental activities showed a statistically significant difference between the 65–74 years group and the 55–65 years group, but no difference in females of the leisure activities among the age groups. The independent t-tests demonstrated significant gender differences in MRA of activity of the 55–64 years group. [Conclusion] These findings suggest that health professionals should monitor the changes in retained level of activity after age 75, to maintain their engagement, and the importance of age-, gender- and activity-specific analyses in order to identifying patterns of activity engagement.

Copper(I)–dioxygen reactivity studies utilizing new binucleating ligands are described. When catalytic quantities of either CuI or CuII salts were introduced to LH2, which is a dinucleating ligand with two tridentate donors connected via a methylene group at a bis(2-pyridyl)methane junction, dioxygen addition caused complete oxygenation to give bis(2-pyridyl)ketone product L=O. Isolated dicopper(I) complex [CuI2(LH2)]2+ (1) also reacted with excess O2 to give L=O. Additional observations were consistent with a mechanism that does not involve “oxygen-activation” in this process. Ketone hydration and gem-diol(ate) copper(II)-coordination occurred by addition of copper(II)–perchlorate to L=O, giving [CuII2{L(OH)(O−)}Cu2II(−OClO3)]2+ (4), with a bridging alkoxide moiety (X-ray). Oxygenation of [CuI2(L=O)(CH3CN)2]2+ (2) (2/O2 = 0.5, i.e., Cu/O2 = 4:1 manometry), gave [CuII2{L(O−)2}(−OClO3)]+ (5), where both oxygen atoms of the doubly deprotonated gem-diolate bind separate copper(II) ions; mass spectrometric data showed that one of the two oxygen atoms of the gem-diolate L(O−)2 came from O2. An oxo–dicopper(II) species is suggested as an important intermediate, which is supported by the observation that reaction of 2 with NO or iodosylbenzene also produced 5 in high yields. Complexes 4 and 5 are acid–base conjugate pairs and can be readily interconverted using Et3N or HClO4(aq) reagents.
