This paper introduces a new fine-grained voice source analysis method and its application to filled pause analysis in the CSJ (Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese). The new source analysis procedure is designed to provide annotation with reliable and precise descriptions of objective characteristics to items in large speech corpora. This design target made the new analysis method provide far more accurate descriptions than existing methods. The new method provides the fundamental frequency estimate and the band-wise aperiodicity information simultaneously. It also provides an information-rich representation of a probability map of the fundamental component. This paper presents several analysis examples and discussions.

A perception experiment and analyses were conducted to clarify the acoustic features of pop-out voice. Speech items pronounced by 779 native Japanese speakers were prepared for stimuli by mixing them with a babble noise that consisted of overlapping short sentences spoken by 10 Japanese speakers. Using a 5-point scale, 12 Japanese participants rated the pop-out score of the speech items listened using headphones. The scores and acoustic features of the speech items were investigated using correlation analysis and principal coordinate analysis. It was revealed that the pop-out score relates to the acoustic features such as overall intensity, relative intensity in the high-frequency range, fundamental frequency, dynamic feature of the spectrum, and a spectrum shape in high frequency. The results suggest that these are crucial acoustic features for the pop-out voice.

A very high quality speech analysis, modification and synthesis system—STRAIGHT—has now been implemented in C language and operated in realtime. This article first provides a brief summary of STRAIGHT components and then introduces the underlying principles that enabled realtime operation. In STRAIGHT, the built-in extended pitch synchronous analysis, which does not require analysis window alignment, plays an important role in realtime implementation. A detailed description of the processing steps, which are based on the so-called “just-in-time” architecture, is presented. Further, discussions on other issues related to realtime implementation and performance measures are also provided. The software will be available to researchers upon request.
