Two specimens (68.8–72.3 mm standard length) of Ostorhinchus chrysotaenia (Bleeker, 1851), previously recorded from Indonesia, northwestern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, northern Borneo, Philippines, and Taiwan, and recently collected off Yaku Island, Osumi Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, represent the first records of the species from Japan supported by voucher specimens, and the northernmost distributional record of the species. The holotype and an additional non-type specimen of O. chrysotaenia were determined from two Bleeker specimens registered under the same catalog number.

Twenty-four specimens (184.6–243.6 mm in standard length) of Monotaxis Anonymous [Bennett], 1830, collected from the Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan, were identified as M. heterodon (Bleeker, 1854) (Perciformes: Lethrinidae). Although a widely distributed Indo-West Pacific species, all previous records from Japanese waters have been based solely on photographs, the present specimens therefore representing the first specimen-based records of M. heterodon from Japan. A detailed comparison between M. heterodon and its only congener, M. grandoculis (Forsskål, 1775), from which it has previously been distinguished primarily by scale rows below the lateral line and fresh or live coloration, revealed new diagnostic characters, most of which are applicable to preserved specimens. In addition to previously recognized characters, the two species can be distinguished by mid-dorsal snout profile in adults (concave vs. straight), snout length (excluding lips) [8.9–11.1 (mean 9.9) % of SL vs. 10.3–12.1 (11.2) % SL], spinous anal-fin base length [4.6–5.9 (5.0) % of SL vs. 3.9–4.9 (4.4) % SL], a distinct black blotch above the pupil (absent vs. present), a dark brown stripe across the post interorbital region in preserved specimens (present vs. absent), and preserved coloration of the pectoral-fin base inner surface (blackish brown vs. light brown).

Fifteen specimens (70.9–95.5 mm standard length) of the Indo-Pacific species Scorpaenodes corallinus Smith, 1957, previously recorded from Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, the Seychelles, Indonesia, Australia, the Hawaiian Islands, New Caledonia and French Polynesia, and recently collected from Okinawa Island (Okinawa Islands) and Yoron Island (Amami Islands), represent the first Japanese records of the species. Examination of a wide range of specimens indicated that the presence of coronal spines (formerly considered diagnostic of the species) was inconsistent. The new standard Japanese name “Ichigo-isokasago” is proposed for the species.

Ocosia spinosa Chen, 1981 (Tetrarogidae) is newly recorded from the Pacific coast of Japan, on the basis of 10 specimens (31.3–78.1 mm standard length), having been previously reported only from Taiwan. A revised diagnosis for the species, based on the Japanese specimens plus a single specimen from Taiwan, is given as follows: XV–XVIII, 7 or 8 dorsal-fin rays; III, 4–6 anal-fin rays; usually 13 (rarely 12) pectoral-fin rays; 12–18 lateral-line pores on body; 6–15 gill rakers; usually 28 (rarely 27) vertebrae; 2nd dorsal-fin spine longest, slightly longer than 3rd spine; interspinous dorsal-fin membranes of middle portion of dorsal fin incised for one-fourth to one-third of each spine length; dorsal profile of snout concave; posterior lacrimal spine directed backward, its length about 2–3 times greater than that of anterior lacrimal spine; small lateral lacrimal spine usually present (absent in larger specimens); small spine usually present at anterior end of suborbital ridge in smaller specimens (absent in larger specimens); weak stubby papillae covering upper lip and anterior half to one-third of lower lip; trunk uniformly brownish-red when fresh, without distinct markings (but with faint brownish small blotch near base of middle portion of dorsal fin in some individuals). Although the presence or absence of small spines on the lateral surface of the lacrimal and anterior end of the suborbital ridge has previously been regarded as an important diagnostic character of O. spinosa, examination of the present specimens showed that the character changes with growth. The present specimens represent the first Japanese records, as well as the northernmost and easternmost records for the species. The new English and Japanese standard names “Red Waspfish” and “Aka-hachiokoze”, respectively, are proposed for O. spinosa.

Seven specimens (149.0–221.2 mm standard length) of Pristipomoides amoenus (Snyder, 1911), previously known only from Okinawa-jima and Ishigaki-jima islands, southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, were collected from other regions of Japan (Amami-oshima island, Amami Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture), Taiwan (Dong-gang, Pingtung), the Philippines (Iloilo, Panay Island), and Fiji (Viti Levu Island), thereby representing the first records of the species from outside Okinawa Prefecture. The Amami-oshima and Fijian specimens also represent the northernmost and first Southern Hemisphere records, respectively, for the species. Comparison of these plus newly collected specimens from the southern Ryukyu Islands (herein described in detail) with the closely related species Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1832) revealed the following hitherto unrecognized diagnostic color features of P. amoenus: a few small silvery-blue blotches present inside yellow saddles on dorsum; small silvery-blue blotches below trunk lateral line absent or indistinct; a distinct line (formed by small silvery-blue blotches) absent on lower caudal peduncle; a large silvery-blue blotch present on upper opercle, extending anteriorly beyond preopercular margin; a line formed by small silvery-blue blotches on upper caudal peduncle ending at upper caudal-fin base; a pair of lines formed by small silvery-blue blotches along dorsal-fin base (dorsal view); a larger pair of elliptical silvery-blue blotches on occipital region (all silvery-blue blotches retained as dark-brown blotches after preservation). Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus is newly recorded from the Tokara Islands, northern Ryukyu Islands, Japan.

Eighteen specimens of Sardinella gibbosa (Bleeker, 1849) collected from Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan represent the first Japanese specimen-based records of the species. All specimens conformed closely to the diagnosis of S. gibbosa, having the caudal fin uniformly pale, a black spot on the dorsal-fin origin, body scales with centrally discontinuous striae, 26−31+50–57=77–88 gill rakers on the first gill arch, and 18 or 19+14 or 15=32–34 keeled scutes along the body ventral surface. In addition, some previous Japanese records of unidentified clupeoid fishes are reviewed.

Pseudorhombus elevatus Ogilby, 1912 and P. quinquocellatus Weber and de Beaufort, 1929 (Teleostei: Paralichthyidae) are newly recorded from Japan, based on 35 and two specimens, respectively, from Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands. Although both species have previously been recorded from Taiwan, no Japanese records are known to date. Pseudorhombus elevatus is characterized, and readily distinguished from Japanese congeners, by numerous minute teeth on both jaws, three dark blotches along the straight section of the ocular-side trunk lateral line, and dorsal- and anal-fin ray numbers. Pseudorhombus quinquocellatus resembles P. pentophthalmus Günther, 1862 and P. oculocirris Amaoka, 1969, all sharing five dark ocelli on the ocular-side body (two pairs of ocelli above and below the lateral line plus a single ocellus on the posterior portion of the lateral line). However, the former is characterized by strong caniniform teeth on both jaws (vs. no strong caniniform teeth in P. pentophthalmus and P. oculocirris); fewer lower gill rakers (9–11 in Japanese specimens) (vs. 15–21); and two dark skin flaps along the gill opening below the pectoral-fin base (vs. absent). The status of the type specimens of P. quinquocellatus was also considered, all three being regarded as syntypes, in the absence of a formal lectotype proposal. New standard Japanese names, “Maru-ganzō-birame” and “Niten-ganzō-birame,” are proposed for P. elevatus and P. quinquocellatus, respectively, the name “Itsutsume-ganzō” now being referred to P. megalops Fowler, 1934.

Lepadichthys akiko Allen and Erdmann, 2012, previously known only from the holotype from West Papua, Indonesia, is recorded from Japan and Palau for the first time, based on underwater photographs and two specimens, respectively. The latter (12.3 and 14.0 mm standard length) revealed new diagnostic characters of the species: viz., 3 of 5 gill arches with 2 filaments and 4 or 5 gill rakers on each arch; single nasal and postocular canal pores; and no lacrimal, preopercular or mandibular canal pores. The new specimens are described in detail, including a revised diagnosis and comparisons made with congeners.

During the past three decades, ten specimens (174.1–235.1 mm standard length) of the Bluespotted Hind Cephalopholis cyanostigma (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1828), distributed in the eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans, have been collected from the southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan, although the species has been formally recorded from Japanese waters only on the basis of a single photograph, with the northernmost specimen-based record being Taiwan. The Ryukyu Island specimens, described here in detail, represent the first specimen-based records of C. cyanostigma from Japan, in addition to the northernmost record of the species. The new standard Japanese name “Samidare-hata” is proposed for the species.

Two specimens (124.0-148.6mm standard length) of a scorpionfish, Idiastion pacificum Ishida and Amaoka, 1992, were collected from the central North Pacific, representing the first record of the species from this area. This finding extends the distributional range of Idiastion pacificum, which was previously known only from the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, western North Pacific. This study provides new morphological data and a color photograph of I. pacificum based on these two additional specimens, with a comparison to Idiastion kyphos Eschmeyer, 1965.

Epinephelus kupangensis Tucker, Kurniasih, and Craig, 2016, previously known from the Indo-West Pacific as far north as Taiwan, was recorded from Japan for the first time on the basis of two specimens (98.1–384.6 mm SL) collected from Tosa Bay, Kochi and Okinawa prefectures. The Kochi specimen had been previously reported as the first Japanese specimen of “Kokuten-aohata”, Epinephelus amblycephalus (Bleeker, 1857). Epinephelus kupangensis differs from the latter in having slightly lower numbers of lateral-line scales (46–49 vs. 48–51) and lateral scale series 91–99 (vs. 103–120), and lacking a U-shaped white marking dorsolaterally on the head and a white band below the orbit (vs. both present). The standard Japanese name “Kokuten-aohata” should be applied to E. kupangensis, the new standard Japanese name “Yahazu-aohata” being proposed for E. amblycephalus.
