A new species of the genus Alpinia subgenus Alpinia subsection Catimbium (Zingiberaceae), A. nelumboides is described from Laos and Vietnam. It is morphologically most similar to A. kwangsiensis, but distinguished by its large pinkish bracteoles, shorter petioles, entire margin of labellum, and larger pubescent ovoid fruits.

A new species, Zingiber procumbens Nob.Tanaka & M.M.Aung (Zingiberaceae), from Kayah State, eastern Myanmar, is described with color plates. Zingiber procumbens is assignable to section Cryptanthium Horan. based on lateral inflorescences on the procumbent peduncles. This species is similar to Z. bradleyanum Craib in vegetative characters, but well distinguished from it by a combination of long bilobed ligules, lamina with silvery line, procumbent peduncle, tubular bracts with dark reddish stripes, and flowers with purple orbicular labellum. Detailed descriptions, color plates and preliminary IUCN assessments are provided.

We performed surgical treatment for cerebellar metastasis of relatively rare small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNC) of the urinary bladder. On preoperative imaging, the lesion was solitary, and the edema around the tumor was unremarkable; thus, other differential diagnoses besides a metastatic brain tumor were also considered preoperatively. Intraoperatively, the tumor was soft, and the circumference brain and boundary were indistinct and easily hemorrhagic. The tumor was grossly totally removed, and postoperative radiotherapy was added. The clinical symptoms of the patient were relieved, and he was discharged on foot. Thus far, relatively few reports have described surgical treatment of brain metastases of SCNC of the urinary bladder. We herein report a case of metastatic brain tumor due to SCNC of the urinary bladder that required surgical treatment, along with a review of the previous literature regarding its clinical features and the characteristics of intracranial lesions related to surgery, such as imaging and intraoperative findings.

A new orchid species, Dendrobium popaense T.Yukawa & Nob.Tanaka is described from Mt. Popa, central Myanmar. It is discriminated from the closely related D. bensoniae by its smaller size in perianth lobes, its higher ratio of the length of mentum to dorsal sepal, and its conspicuously papillate operculum. From D. jinghuanum, the new species is separable by its lack of purple floral pigmentation, its lemon-yellow disk of labellum, its smaller size in perianth lobes, its higher ratio of the length of mentum to dorsal sepal, and its short, erect stem.

Strangles is a commonly diagnosed and important infectious disease of equids worldwide, caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. equi. We determined the SeM genotypes of S. equi isolated from imported horses at the Japanese border within the past 8 years, which allowed us to classify 12 strains isolated from these horses from each exporter into four allelic groups. These alleles were different from the alleles of past isolates found in Japan. Furthermore, four strains classified into the same allele were isolated from horses from one exporter over several years. In this study, S. equi isolates from different exporters had different SeM alleles. Attention to the hygiene status of farms will be necessary to prevent the incursion of strangles.
