This paper investigates the effect of a hearer's attitude toward a speaker's multimodal behaviors. Twenty-one university students, nine males and twelve females, participated in this experiment as speakers. Two females, aged 22 years old, performed in the role of hearers. The experiment was carried out under two conditions regarding the hearer's attitude: polite and impolite conditions. The polite hearer nodded, produced back-channel response, and gazed at the speaker, while the impolite hearer did these actions to a lesser extent. Under each condition, the speakers talked about their own experiences to the two different hearers through a within-participants design. The speech, gaze, and body motion of speakers were recorded with a video camera. In addition, the communication skills of speakers, including expressivity, sensitivity, regulation, assertiveness, and responsiveness skills, were measured after the experiment. The speakers' silent pauses, filled pauses, gaze aversion, and representational gestures were compared between the hearers' two politeness conditions. The relationship between the multimodal behaviors and the speakers' communication skills was also analyzed. The results suggest that the speakers' silent pauses, filled pauses, and gaze aversion decreased in the polite hearer condition, while representational gestures increased. From the communication-skills test, the speakers with higher expressivity, sensitivity, and regulation skills but lower assertiveness and responsiveness skills show longer silent pauses under the impolite hearer condition. Moreover, we discuss how the implications of our findings can enhance the relationship between social robots and people.

Background: Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) on magnetic resonance imaging can predict prognosis after aortic valve replacement in patients with aortic stenosis (AS). However, the usefulness of ECV on computed tomography (CT) for patients who have undergone transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is unclear, so we investigated whether ECV analysis on CT is associated with clinical outcomes in TAVR candidates. Methods and Results: We analyzed 127 patients with severe AS who underwent preoperative CT for TAVR. We evaluated the utility of ECV analysis on single-energy CT for predicting patient prognosis after TAVR. The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause death and hospitalization due to heart failure (HF) after TAVR. 15 patients (12%) had composite outcomes: 4 deaths and 11 hospitalizations due to HF. In multivariate survival analysis using the Cox proportional hazard model, atrial fibrillation (AF) (hazard ratio (HR), 7.86; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.57–24.03; P<0.001), history of congestive HF (HR, 4.91; 95% CI, 1.49–16.2; P=0.009) and ECV ≥32.6% on CT (HR, 6.96; 95% CI, 1.92–25.12; P=0.003) were independent predictors of composite outcomes. On Kaplan-Meier analysis, the higher ECV group (≥32.6%) had a significantly greater number of composite outcomes than the lower ECV group (P<0.001).Conclusions: ECV on CT is an independent predictor of prognosis after TAVR.

The tongue possesses a complex muscular structure, and its motor functions are also intricate. Therefore, it would be beneficial to use a computational physiological model of the tongue to examine its vital functions in normal and pathological conditions. Thus far, the studies of tongue models have focused on symmetric movements for normal speech. For clinical purposes, it is necessary to develop a physiological model to deal with daily vital activities such as mastication and swallowing. To do so, we constructed a full 3D physiological model of the tongue based on MRI data from a normal subject, and verified the basic functions of the model based on anatomic and physiological knowledge. In this study, the model was applied to clinical issues: prediction and verification of the changes in movements of the tongue with a tumor before and after partial glossectomy, respectively. Tongue protrusion and lateral bending motion were examined for the prediction and verification. The simulation results were consistent with the observations for a patient with a tumor in the tongue. Comparisons of the simulation and observation in the clinical case showed that the model could predict potential effects of the glossectomy on the tongue movements. It is suggested that the model is a useful tool for pre-operative planning of glossectomy.
