In the Heian era, the invention of kana (Japanese syllabary) has brought about many linguistic changes. Especially the changes were remarkable in the field of literature. Many monogataris (novels or romans) were written in kana, read by many people. In waka, kakekotoba (homonymy), a kind of rhetoric has been polished. At last, Japanese had got letter they can write their own language more easilly and exactly. As soon as kana was invented, Taketori-Monogatari, the oldest monogatari, called “A father of monogatari”, was written. This monogatari contains 15 waka. This monogatari consists of topics about 5 noblemen’s proposal to Kaguya-Hime and topics of emperor’s proposal and Hime’s return to the moon. In the story of 5men’s proposal, waka is skillful with kakekotoba and humorous, contrary in the story of emperor’s proposal and return, waka is simple, serious and lyrical. The difference between the two shows Kaguya-Hime’s change into a human. And it is important that exchanges of waka form human relations in this monogatari. As the progress of monogatari, poetic lyricism arises, but, it is negated. In the scene of Mt. Fuji, finally monogatari has regained the poetic lyricism. Taketori-Monogatari has been enriched by the use of kana.
