A number of descriptive reports suggest that Cybister larvae feed on tadpoles, fish, and aquatic insects; however, no quantitative study on their feeding habits has been reported. In order to elucidate the feeding ecology of C. brevis larvae, field observations and laboratory experiments were carried out. In the field, all C. brevis larvae fed on invertebrates, such as insects and isopoda, but did not eat vertebrates, such as fish and anuran larvae. A rearing experiment demonstrated that all C. brevis larvae provided with tadpoles died. Larvae provided with Odonata nymphs had a longer total body length than larvae reared with a mixture of tadpoles and Odonata nymphs. In addition, larvae of C. brevis could search for and eat motionless Odonata nymphs, but all larvae died from starvation when they were supplied with motionless tadpoles. These results suggested that C. brevis larvae mainly preyed upon invertebrate animals and did not eat vertebrate animals, such as tadpoles and fish.

Iwogumoa songminjae (Paik and Yaginuma in Paik et al., 1969) is recorded for the first time from Japan on the basis of specimens collected in the Tsushima Islands, Kyushu and previously identified as I. insidiosa (L. Koch, 1878). The relationships among the Japanese species of Iwogumoa Kishida, 1955 are analyzed using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I with various Japanese species of Coelotes Blackwall, 1841 sensu lato as the outgroup. A new synonym is proposed through a comparison of morphological characteristics and the results of our molecular analysis: Coelotes iyoensis Nishikawa, 2009 (known only from the male) is a junior synonym of Coelotes mohrii Nishikawa, 2009 (known only from the female).

The tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 hit the Pacific coast and caused heavy destruction of natural and man-made environments in north-eastern Japan. This study focuses on mosquito larvae and their potential aquatic insect predators associated with ground pools and pools that appeared in the concrete foundations of destroyed houses (concrete pool) in inundated areas in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Field samplings were conducted on late July 2013. Culex inatomii, Cx. pipiens group, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, and Cx. orientalis were collected from ground pools and concrete pools. The abundance of Cx. inatomii and Cx. pipiens groups in concrete pools was significantly greater than that in the ground pools. A large number of Hydroglyphus japonicus were collected as potential mosquito predators, followed by Micronecta spp., Enochrus japonicus, Rhantus sturalis, Aquarius paludm paludum and Hydrochara affinis, categorized as “flight dispersers,” which might immigrate rapidly from the non-inundated rice fields or wetlands. Stepwise generalized linear models suggested that larval abundance of Cx. inatomii in the pools studied was affected by the vegetation cover and habitat type (ground pool or concrete pool), but not by water depth, salinity, presence of predators, and bottom type (sand or concrete) of aquatic bodies. Concrete pools and covered with dense vegetation provide breeding habitat for Cx. inatomii along with their potential predators.
