Active surveillance (AS) for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), which was initiated at Kuma Hospital (Kobe, Japan) in 1993 and Cancer Institute Hospital (Tokyo) in 1995, is now gradually being adopted worldwide, and several prospective studies have described the favorable outcomes of PTMC patients who underwent AS. The most important factor predicting PTMC growth is young age, and PTMC enlargement in young patients may be affected by high serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. This review notes that one patient showed lung metastasis after conversion surgery (CS) following AS, but there are no reports of patients dying of thyroid carcinoma during or after AS. Some PTMCs enlarge or show newly appeared metastatic nodes requiring CS, and findings on the postoperative prognosis and incidence of significant surgical complications (e.g., permanent vocal cord paralysis, hypoparathyroidism) do not differ significantly between patients who underwent CS after AS and those who underwent immediate surgery (IS). IS has been associated with significantly higher incidences of these complications compared to AS as the initial management. Several studies have examined the quality of life (QoL) of patients who underwent AS versus IS, and reported discrepant findings regarding various psychological conditions (including anxiety). Medical costs for AS and IS vary regionally, and in Japan, the 10-year total cost of IS was 4.1 times greater than that of AS in 2017. Taken together, the existing findings demonstrate that AS can be appropriate for the initial management of patients with PTMC.

Quinolones are known to induce hypoglycemia, although there is no written report of garenoxacin-induced hypoglycemia. We herein report a case of garenoxacin-induced hypoglycemia in a patient not taking hypoglycemic drugs. An 89-year-old Japanese woman with type 2 diabetes and chronic renal insufficiency requiring hemodialysis was admitted to the emergency department in a comatose state. Her serum glucose measured 1 mg/dL on arrival. The patient had not taken any hypoglycemic drugs recently and had never experienced a hypoglycemic episode. She had received a four-day course of garenoxacin treatment before the emergency admission. Clinicians should therefore recognize the potential risk of hypoglycemia during garenoxacin therapy.

Acetamiprid (ACE), a neonicotinoid chemical, is widely used as a pesticide due to its rapid insecticidal activity. Although neonicotinoids exert very low toxicity in mammals, the effects of early exposure to neonicotinoids on the adult central nervous system are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of ACE exposure in early life on brain function in adult mice. We exposed male C57BL/6N mice to ACE (10 mg/kg) orally when they were two (postnatal lactation) or 11 weeks old (adult). We examined the effects of ACE on the central nervous system using the mouse behavioral test battery, consisting of the open field test, light/dark transition test, elevated plus-maze test, contextual/cued fear conditioning test, and pre-pulse inhibition test at 12–13 weeks old. In the mouse behavioral test battery, learning memory abnormalities were detected in the mature treatment group. In addition, learning memory and emotional abnormalities were detected in the postnatal lactation treatment group. These results suggest that the behavioral effects of postnatal lactation treatment with ACE were qualitatively different from the behavioral abnormalities in the mature treatment group.

Considerable research is being directed toward active debris removal (ADR) in space, especially by small, cost-effective satellites. In the descent phase, thrust vector control (TVC) is often utilized to maintain the satellite’s trajectory and thrust vector by gimbaling the thrust vector. A common challenge in performing TVC is that its effectiveness depends on the mass, moment of inertia and location of the thrusting point with respect to the center of mass. Since these properties change with fuel consumed during a mission, a designer needs to consider such parameters as they strongly affect the resulting dynamics. This paper introduces spacecraft dynamics with a gimbaled thruster and proposes an adaptive controller for TVC with model uncertainties. Through numerical examples, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated for improved control performance.

Reportedly, antibiotics, which are frequently prescribed in children, have long-term effects owing to gut microbiota dysregulation. Tosufloxacin tosilate hydrate (TFLX) is the first orally administered new quinolone with high efficacy and broad-spectrum action approved as an antibacterial agent for pediatric use in Japan. However, studies on the effects of its early-stage administration are limited. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the later effects of its developmental administration by monitoring growth rate, neurobehavior, and gut microbiota in mice. The TFLX was administered via drinking water at a dose of up to 300 mg/kg for two consecutive weeks during the developmental period (4–6 weeks of age) or adulthood (8–10 weeks of age). Thereafter, the body weights of the mice were measured weekly to monitor growth rate. Behavioral tests were also conducted on 11–12-week-old mice to examine the neurobehavioral effects of the treatment. Further, to examine the effects of the treatment on microbiota, fecal samples were collected from the rectum of mice dissected at 12 weeks of age, and 16s rRNA analysis was conducted. Our results showed increased body weights after TFLX administration, without any long-term effects. Behavioral analysis suggested alterations in anxiety-like behaviors and memory recall dysregulation, and gut microbiota analysis revealed significant differences in bacterial composition. These findings indicated that TFLX administration during the developmental period affects mice growth rate, neurobehavior, and gut microbiota structure. This is the first study to report that TFLX is potentially associated with the risk of long effects.

As the amount of debris in orbit increases, so does the risk of collisions and their seriousness. All nations involved with space operations acknowledge this growing threat. One solution receiving increased attention is active debris removal. The first step in a debris removal mission would be to approach the debris. In this phase, it is important to ensure passive abort safety and to guarantee the robustness against collisions in the case of off-nominal thruster burns, that may be caused by spacecraft anomalies such as navigation sensor or actuator failures. This paper compares two types of passive abort safe trajectories –the V-bar hopping and spiral approaches– considering the ΔV budget, the duration of operations, and variation in the line-of-sight vector to the target. This paper also proposes design strategies for determining the parameters in the two candidate trajectories, considering passive abort safety. The robustness of the trajectories against collisions due to off-nominal thruster burns is also demonstrated through Monte Carlo simulations. The paper investigates which trajectories are suitable for an active debris removal mission to a non-cooperative target.
