Most coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases are mild or asymptomatic, and a substantial minority of patients have severe or critical diseases. There are several reports on the potential risk factors of severe disease, but few reports have reported a relationship between antibody titer and severity in Japan. Antibody-dependent enhancement affects disease progression. We evaluated the IgG responses in COVID-19 patients at our tertiary hospital. The IgG index was the measure of interest. We assigned 1.4 as the cutoff value for a positive result based on the specifications by the manufacturer and observed that patients could be categorized into two groups: the early elevation of IgG and late elevation of IgG (IgG elevated in the first 7 days ± 2 days or more than 10 days after symptom onset) groups. The former comprised early IgG responders (n = 7) and the latter comprised late IgG responders (n = 14), and they were compared. The C-reactive protein and D-dimer concentrations were significantly higher in the early IgG responders on admission (HD 0). The respiratory rate was also higher. The lymphocytes were significantly fewer on day 7 of hospitalization (HD 7). These results suggest that early production of anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 IgG may be associated with clinical indicators of severity.

Neurogenesis occurs in the adult hippocampus and is enhanced by dietary restriction (DR), and neurogenesis enhancement is paralleled by circulating ghrelin level enhancement. We have previously reported that ghrelin modulates adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. In order to investigate the possible role of ghrelin in DR-induced hippocampal neurogenesis in adult mice, ghrelin knockout (GKO) mice and wild-type (WT) mice were maintained for 3 months on DR or ad libitum (AL) diets. Protein levels of ghrelin in the stomach and the hippocampus were increased by DR in WT mice. One day after BrdU administration, the number of BrdU-labeled cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus was decreased in GKO mice maintained on the AL diet. DR failed to alter the proliferation of progenitor cells in both WT and GKO mice. Four weeks after BrdU injection, the number of surviving cells in the dentate gyrus was decreased in AL-fed GKO mice. DR increased survival of newborn cells in WT mice, but not in GKO mice. Levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein in the hippocampus were similar between WT and GKO mice, and were increased by DR both in WT and GKO mice. These results suggest that elevated levels of ghrelin during DR may have an important role in the enhancement of neurogenesis induced by DR.

Aromatic components in the essential oil prepared from the leaves of cultivated Myrica gale var. tomentosa were compared with those from oil derived wild plants by using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). We found that essential oils from both the wild and cultivated plants contained similar aromatic components such as β-elemenone, selina 3,7(11)-diene, myrcene, limonene, cymene, 1,8-cineole, and β-pinene, but the content ratio of the oil was significantly different, which might yield differences in the aromatic properties. The aroma impact components of the essential oils were also determined using GC/MS-Olfactometry (GC/MS-O) and aroma extract dilution analysis. Eight aromatic compounds, including linalool, limonene, and 1,8-cineole, were shown to contribute to the aromatic properties of cultivated M. gale var. tomentosa. The strongest aromatic note was defined as linalool, followed by limonene, 1,8-cineole, and β-elemenone. The essential oil, ethanol (EtOH), 1,3-butylene glycol (BG), and 1,3-propanediol (PD) extracts prepared from the leaves of cultivated M. gale var. tomentosa also showed antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, that is, they demonstrated scavenger activity against hydroxyl and superoxide radicals in the aqueous phase, and showed inhibitory effects on lipid peroxidation. The essential oil extracts also exhibited antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria, with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration value against Bacillus subtilis. In conclusion, the essential oil and solvent extracts from cultivated M. gala var. tomentosa have a potential for utilization as food and cosmetic ingredients.

Needle insertion treatments require accurate placement of a needle tip into the target cancer. However, it is difficult to insert the needle into a lesion because of tumor displacement during organ deformation. Therefore, path planning using a needle insertion simulation to analyze deformation of an organ is important for accurate needle insertion. A frictional model for needle insertion simulation is presented in this report. In particular, we focus on a model of frictional force based on the relative velocity between a needle and liver tissue ranging from hyper to slow velocity. In vitro experiments using porcine liver were performed at several relative velocities to measure the velocity dependence of the frictional force. Sixty trials of frictional force data were used to obtain average data at each relative velocity. The model of frictional force was then developed using the averages of the experimental results. This model was defined according to relative velocity, including hyper-slow velocity. Our modeling and experimental results show that the frictional force between the tissue and the needle increased during low relative velocity (under 1.5mm/s) and became constant (over 1.5mm/s).

The purpose of this study was to describe, explain, and recommend how women’s professional soccer players and clubs could prepare for second career transitions in a way that minimizes psychosocial crises upon retirement. The Japan Women’s Empowerment Professional Football League (called the WE league) was founded with a mission to contribute towards building a sustainable society through promoting female social participation and enhancing diversity and choice. This study suggested training strategies that could foster second career development in the WE league. These strategies are (a) including theoretical frameworks in second career pathways, (b) the necessity of dual education pathways for Japanese women’s professional athletes, (c) promoting virtual internship experiences for Japanese women’s professional athletes, and (d) recommendations of second career training workshops for professional athletes in the WE League. The WE League and teams should allow professional athletes to improve meaningful skills and knowledge development, multiple experiential learning opportunities, and applicable training on second career development. Due to the paucity of research in this area, it is essential for scholars to further explore potential education and internships opportunities to ease transitions to second careers upon retirement.

Pulmonary artery agenesis (PAA) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly usually diagnosed during infancy. We herein report a 67-year-old man with PAA manifesting as massive hemoptysis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest revealed the diagnosis of PAA, which we speculated to have resulted in the present event. Detailed angiography provided more accurate information on the pulmonary vasculature and collateral circulation, which helped us plan tailored treatment. Although very rare, we must consider the possibility of PAA in adults with unexplained hemoptysis.

Chikungunya virus infection (CVI) typically manifests via a “two-phase” presentation: most patients develop acute fever and some patients subsequently develop arthralgia that can persist for years. Many patients visit clinics during the second phase, for relief of the arthralgia, but not during the acute febrile phase. We report a 25-year-old Japanese man infected with CVI in Jamaica who presented with chronic disabling peripheral-dominant symmetric polyarthralgia without fever, which affected the neck, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers. Given the recent emergence of dengue fever in Japan, clinicians should consider CVI as a differential diagnosis of dengue fever when examining travelers complaining of persistent arthralgia, regardless of their countries of origin.
