The Space Robotics Laboratory (SRL) of Tohoku University has developed a 50-kg-class microsatellite called RISESAT, which was launched in January 2019. The main missions of this satellite are to conduct earth observation using a high-resolution telescope and perform a demonstration of optical communication. To achieve these missions, it is necessary to maintain the on-board components in a specified safe temperature range. In this satellite, on-board components such as the battery and power control unit are mounted to the central pillars of the satellite structure, which are insulated from the outer panels, and are thus not easily affected by the external environment. Therefore, it is important to determine the amount of heat generation by the components as well as the heat transfer parameters between structure panels. The purpose of this study is to determine the parameters such as thermal contact conductance between structure panels and heat generation of the components. We conducted the thermal vacuum tests to improve the accuracy of the determination of these parameters. Finally, we analyzed the flight data and evaluated the validity of the parameter determination using data from the regular operations phase of the mission. The seasonal effects on the thermal design were also evaluated using data from the first 480 days after launch.

To study the effect of meal timing after exercise on body composition, 20 male rats were assigned to either a group fed a meal right after exercise (R) or a group fed a meal 4 h after exercise (L). Resistance exercise (squatting) was conducted from 6:00 to 7:00, 3 d/wk for 10 wk. Meals were consumed from 7:00 to 8:00 and from 19:00 to 20:00 for R, and from 11:00 to 12:00 and from 19:00 to 20:00 for L. The room was lighted from 7:00 to 19:00. After 10 wk, the body weight was comparable between the groups. The hindlimb muscle weight was higher in R than in L by 6% (p<0.05), whereas the sum of the weight of perirenal, epididymal, and mesenteric adipose tissues was lower in R than in L by 24% (p<0.01). The soleus lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity was higher in R than in L by 70% (p<0.01), and the activity negatively correlated with the adipose tissue weight (r=-0.49, p<0.05). These results suggest the possibility that ingesting a meal right after resistance exercise may contribute to an increase in the muscle mass and to a decrease in the adipose tissue compared to ingesting a meal several hours later.

Background: Aortic artery disease (AAD), such as aortic dissection or aortic aneurysm rupture, is fatal, with an extremely high mortality. Because of its low incidence, the risk for the development of AAD has not yet been elucidated. Hypertension (HT) is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but there has been no prospective study on the effect of HT on AAD-related mortality. Methods and Results: We used a nationwide database of 276,197 subjects (aged 40–75 years) who participated in the annual “Specific Health Check and Guidance in Japan” from 2008 to 2010. There were 80 AAD-related deaths during the follow-up period of 1,049,549 person-years. On multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression, HT was an independent risk factor for AAD-related death in apparently healthy subjects. On receiver operating characteristics curve analysis for AAD-related death, abnormal systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were 130 mmHg and 82 mmHg, respectively. The prediction capacity was significantly improved by the addition of SBP to confounding risk factors. Notably, further improvement of the C index was observed by addition of DBP to the model with SBP. Conclusions: This is the first report to prospectively show that HT is a risk factor for AAD-related death. Both SBP and DBP are of critical importance in the primary prevention of AAD-related death in apparently healthy subjects.

The volume of clinical research carried out in Japan is relatively small by global standards, especially when compared with the country's contributions to basic research. Although the academic quality of the clinical research done here is generally high, its relative paucity has had a number of alarming consequences, e.g., delays in the approval of important new drugs and medical devices caused by difficulties in clinical trials, leading to the limited availability of novel treatments for Japanese patients. This article aims to present an overview of current clinical research activities in Japan and to summarise the historical, socio-cultural and regulatory issues underlying the current situation. Suggestions are made as to how the present problems might be resolved and how a brighter future for clinical research might be achieved.
