The characteristic use of masks in The Great God Brown makes this play attractive and holds fascination for the audience, but at the same time it hinders them in comprehending the connotation of the masks, so different scholars have developed different arguments as for the use of the masks in the play. In this paper we will be concerned with the problem of the personification of the mask and of the transference of personality by the personified mask in Act II. iii. We will briefly examine the problem of the personification of Dion's mask seen in Acts I and II, and then we will discuss the problem of transference of the personality by the personified mask of Dion. In order to explore this issue, we will mainly analyze the following two points: the first is Brown's shift of perception to Dion's mask, from objectified to personified, in the scene where Dion leaves his mask to Brown; the second is varying degree of Dion's mask's independence from Dion himself. It will be found through our examination that showing the shift of Brown's recognition of Dion's mask and of the perspective between Brown and the mask enables O'Neill to dramatize the transfer of Dion's personality to Brown on the stage, by which he enables the development of the following two acts of the play.

幼い孫たちに囲まれ,おとぎ話を語り聞かせる老貴婦人。ロストプチン伯爵令嬢ソフィ,嫁してセギュール伯爵夫人(la Comtesse de Sugur,nee Rostopchine 1799-1874)に大方が抱くこうしたイメージを多少とも変化させ,その作品を再評価していこうとする動きが,作家の没後百数十年を経た現在,ヨーロッパを中心に起き始めている。セギュール伯爵夫人が,処女作『新仙女物語』Nouveaux Contes de feesを世に問うたのは,1858年,著者56歳の冬であった。夫人は,これより前の1855年に『子どもの健康』La Sante des enfantsを自費で出版し,また現在では失われた『子どものミサ典書』を公にしているが,前者は,民間療法による家庭の医学,後者は子どもたちの典礼理解を助けることを目的に書かれた実用的な著作である。母であり祖母である夫人は『新仙女物語』を機に,子どもを対象とする実用書の執筆から,同じく子どもを対象とする創作活動に入っていく。当初,児童を対象とする定期刊行物『こども週間』La Semaine des enfants創刊号に,「ブロンディーヌとボンヌ・ビッシュ,ボン・ミノンのお話と他のお話」として,かねて孫たちに語り聞かせて好評であった5編の物語が掲載された。のちに『新仙女物語』として「バラ色文庫」に収められたこれら5編は,先行する仙女物語を始めとする伝承民話の類型を踏襲しながらも,叙述を貫く作者のまなざしによって独自性と固有の魅力を醸しだす。いまも多くの子どもたち(そして大人たち)に読み継がれるセギュール作品の出発点である『新仙女物語』の解読を試みながら,その魅力の一端を示すことができれば幸いである。

この小論は,『岸英司名誉教授追悼記念号』に載せるために,英知大学論叢編集委員会から依頼された原稿である。「教区司祭の霊性」という題名の論文は,岸英司神父様のような教区司祭でしかも神学教授の方の書くべきものである。しかし,これまで日本語論文の中に,教区司祭の霊性について書かれたものを見たことがない。筆者は,岸英司神父様の生前のお姿とお言葉をしのびながら,この小論をまとめた。神学を専攻したことのない一信徒が教区司祭の霊性について書くことには,ある種の限界を感じているが,あえてそれを超えてまとめてみたい。したがって,教区司祭の霊性そのものを求めながら,今日の教区司祭の理想の姿や信徒の理想の姿,つまり教会のあるべき姿にふれている。小論をまとめるにあたって,教皇庁聖職者省著『司祭の役務と生活に関する指針』(2001年カトリック中央協議会)を参考にした。

The purpose of this paper is to study the difficulties of bringing up a child for the mother of a oneparent family, if her mind is preoccupied unsatisfied housing conditions. Even today mothers in one-parent families have economic and mental difficulties in bringing up a child by themselves. If the mother's mind is too preoccupied with her dissatisfaction about everyday life, she will have problems in looking after her child who needs her attention. One mother attended thirty two sessions of group counselling to get advice about how to cope with her son. However, she did not learn anything from the group. She needs to have basic necessities for living first.
