[Purpose] The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in posture and respiratory functions depending on the duration of smartphone usage. [Subjects and Methods] Participants were randomly allocated to 2 groups: group 1 (subjects who used smartphones for <4 hours/day, n=25) and group 2 (subjects who used smartphones for >4 hours/day, n=25). The craniovertebral angles of all participants were measured and scapular indices were calculated to assess the change in posture and forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in 1 second, the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity, and peak expiratory flow were measured to assess changes in respiratory function. [Results] There were significant differences in the craniovertebral angle, scapular index, and peak expiratory flow depending on the duration of smartphone usage. [Conclusion] The result of this study showed that prolonged use of smartphones could negatively affect both, posture and respiratory function.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of computerized postural control training using whole body vibration on lower limb muscle activity and cerebral cortical activation in acute stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty stroke patients participated and were divided into groups of 10, a group of the computerized postural control training using whole body vibration (Group I), the computerized postural control training combined with aero step (Group II) and computerized postural control training (Group III). MP100 was used to measure lower limb muscle activity, and QEEG-8 was used to measure cerebral cortical activation. [Results] Comparison of muscle activity and cerebral cortical activation before and after intervention between groups showed that Group I had significant differences in lower limb muscle activity and cerebral cortical activation compared to Groups II and III. [Conclusion] This study showed that whole body vibration combined computerized postural control training is effective for improving muscle activity and cerebral cortex activity in stroke patients.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of functional electrical stimulation on muscle tone and stiffness in stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Ten patients who had suffered from stroke were recruited. The intervention was functional electrical stimulation on ankle dorsiflexor muscle (tibialis anterior). The duration of functional electrical stimulation was 30 minutes, 5 times a week for 6 weeks. The Myoton was used a measure the muscle tone and stiffness of the gastrocnemius muscle (medial and lateral part) on paretic side. [Results] In the assessment of muscle tone, medial and lateral part of gastrocnemius muscle showed differences before and after the experiment. Muscle stiffness of medial gastrocnemius muscle showed differences, and lateral gastrocnemius muscle showed differences before and after the experiment. The changes were greater in stiffness scores than muscle tone. [Conclusion] These results suggest that FES on ankle dorsiflexor muscle had a positive effect on muscle tone and stiffness of stroke patients.

[Purpose] To investigate the effects of Pilates breathing on trunk muscle activation. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-eight healthy female adults were selected for this study. Participants’ trunk muscle activations were measured while they performed curl-ups, chest-head lifts, and lifting tasks. Pilates breathing trainings were performed for 60 minutes per each session, 3 times per week for 2 weeks. Post-training muscle activations were measured by the same methods used for the pre-training muscle activations. [Results] All trunk muscles measured in this study had increased activities after Pilates breathing trainings. All activities of the transversus abdominis/internal abdominal oblique, and multifidus significantly increased. [Conclusion] Pilates breathing increased activities of the trunk stabilizer muscles. Activation of the trunk muscle indicates that practicing Pilates breathing while performing lifting tasks will reduce the risk of trunk injuries.

[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to apply early intervention via microcurrent and cryotherapy in patients who underwent rotator cuff reconstruction surgery, and to investigate the effects of such interventions on pain and inflammation levels based on the analysis of C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and on changes in muscle tone. [Subjects and Methods] The study population consisted of 30 patients who had undergone rotator cuff reconstruction surgery, with 10 patients each assigned to the control, experimental I (E-1), and experimental II (E-II) groups. On the day after surgery, muscle tone, blood CRP level, and pain were measured. For the following two weeks, continues passive motion (CPM), icing, cryotherapy, and microcurrent were applied to the each group. After the respective interventions, CRP levels, pain, and muscle tone near the shoulder area were measured again. [Results] In the post-hoc test of between-group comparison, a statistically significant difference in CRP level was found in the cryotherapy group. A difference in shoulder muscle tone appeared only in the supraspinatus muscle, with post-hoc test results showing that the biggest change occurred in the cryotherapy group. [Conclusion] Cryotherapy may be able to help stabilize inflammation as well as reduce pain and muscle tension when applied in patients following rotator cuff reconstruction.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of abnormal shoulder ultrasonographic findings in a sample of asymptomatic women. [Subjects and Methods] A secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study was performed. We recruited 305 women (aged 18–56 years). All the subjects had a structured interview screening for self-reported symptoms and underwent a shoulder ultrasonographic examination, in which both shoulders were examined. The radiologist was blinded to the clinical history of the participants. All detectable shoulder abnormalities were collected. [Results] Of the subjects, 228 (74.75%) were asymptomatic at both shoulders, and 456 asymptomatic shoulders were analyzed. Lack of uniformity (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and biceps brachii long head) was found in 28 shoulders (6.14%), 19 (4.17%) on the dominant side and 9 (1.97%) on the non-dominant side. Tendinosis (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and biceps brachii long head) was found in 19 shoulders (5.32%), 12 (2.63%) on the dominant side and 7 (1.53%) on the non-dominant side. Calcification and other abnormal findings were reported. [Conclusion] The most common abnormalities were calcifications within the rotator-cuff tendons and humeral head geodes; other degenerative findings were less common.

[Purpose] To evaluate treatments with interferential current, hot pack, ultrasound therapy, stretching, strengthening and range-of-motion exercises, comparing between the right and left shoulders in terms of pain and functional capacity in patients with frozen shoulder. This was a retrospective study. [Subjects and Methods] Sixty-four patients (34 right side, 30 left side) were treated with interferential current and hot pack application for 20 min each, ultrasound therapy for 3 min, regular range-of-motion exercises, stretching exercises, strengthening with a Theraband in all directions and post-exercise proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques. All cases were evaluated with visual analogue scales for pain, passive and active range of motion, Constant score, and the shoulder disability questionnaire, at baseline and 7 and 12 weeks after baseline. [Results] Marked improvement was noted in all patients in both right and left sides after treatment, and at 7 and 12 weeks of follow-up compared with baseline. There was no significant difference between the right and left shoulder groups, in all outcome measures. [Conclusion] The combination of physical therapy, exercise, and manual techniques is effective in treating frozen shoulder. The location of the lesion in the right or left shoulder does not, in itself, affect the prognosis or treatment outcome.

[Purpose] The aims of this study were to verify the effects on upper limb circumferences and total body extracellular water of 10 weeks of Nordic Walking (NW) and Walking (W), both alone and combined with a series of exercises created for breast cancer survivors, the ISA method. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty breast cancer survivors were randomly assigned to 4 different training groups and evaluated for upper limb circumferences, total body and extracellular water. [Results] The breast cancer survivors who performed NW, alone and combined with the ISA method, and Walking combined with the ISA method (but not alone) showed significantly reduced arm and forearm circumferences homolateral to the surgical intervention. [Conclusion] For breast cancer survivors, NW, alone and combined with the ISA method, and Walking combined with the ISA method should be prescribed to prevent the onset and to treat light forms of upper limb lymphedema because Walking training practiced alone had no significant effect on upper limb circumference reduction.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the short- and mid-term effects of Kinesio taping on the trapezius muscle in individuals with myofascial pain syndrome. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty-seven patients with active upper trapezius myofascial trigger points were randomly divided to 2 groups: group 1 received Kinesio taping for the upper trapezius muscle, and group 2 received a sham Kinesio taping application. Neck pain (Visual Analog Scale and pressure algometry) and trapezius muscle strength data were collected at baseline, immediately after Kinesio taping application, and at one month follow-up. [Results] The mean changes in Visual Analog Scale scores were significantly different between groups at T2 and T1, with less pain in group 1. The mean changes in algometry scores were significantly different between groups at T3 compared with T2 in favor of group 1. The mean changes in trapezius muscle strength were significantly different between the groups at T2 compared with T1 in favor of group 1. [Conclusion] Patients with myofascial pain syndrome receiving an application of Kinesio taping exhibited statistically significant improvements in pain and upper trapezius muscle strength.

[Purpose] This study investigated the effects of a 12-hour neuromuscular electrical stimulation program in the evening hours on upper extremity function in sub-acute stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Forty-five subjects were randomized to one of three groups: 12-hour neuromuscular electrical stimulation group (n=15), which received 12 hours of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and conventional rehabilitation for the affected upper extremity; neuromuscular electrical stimulation group (n=15), which received 30 min of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and conventional rehabilitation; and control group (n=15), which received conventional rehabilitation only. The Fugl-Meyer assessment, Action Research Arm Test, and modified Ashworth scale were used to evaluate the effects before and after intervention, and 4 weeks later. [Results] The improvement in the distal (wrist-hand) components of the Fugl-Meyer assessment and Action Research Arm Test in the 12-hour neuromuscular electrical stimulation group was more significant than that in the neuromuscular electrical stimulation group. No significant difference was found between the two groups in the proximal component (shoulder-elbow) of the Fugl-Meyer assessment. [Conclusion] The 12-hour neuromuscular electrical stimulation group achieved better improvement in upper extremity motor function, especially in the wrist-hand function. This alternative therapeutic approach is easily applicable and can be used in stroke patients during rest or sleep.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the effects of therapeutic ultrasound on range of motion and stretch pain and the relationships between the effects. [Subjects] The subjects were 15 healthy males. [Methods] Subjects performed all three interventions: (1) ultrasound (US group), (2) without powered ultrasound (placebo group), and (3) rest (control group). Ultrasound was applied at 3 MHz with an intensity of 1.0 W/cm2 and a 100% duty cycle for 10 minutes. The evaluation indices were active and passive range of motion (ROM), stretch pain (visual analog scale; VAS), and skin surface temperature (SST). The experimental protocol lasted a total of 40 minutes; this was comprised of 10 minutes before the intervention, 10 minutes during the intervention (US, placebo, and control), and 20 minutes after the intervention. [Results] ROM and SST were significantly higher in the US group than in the placebo and control groups for the 20 minutes after ultrasound, though there was no change in stretch pain. [Conclusion] The effects of ultrasound on ROM and SST were maintained for 20 minutes after the intervention. The SST increased with ultrasound and decreased afterwards. Additionally, the SST tended to return to baseline levels within 20 minutes after ultrasound exposure. Therefore, these effects were caused by a combination of thermal and mechanical effects of the ultrasound.

[Purpose] Kinesio taping has been postulated to reduce injuries by improving proprioception. To date there remain few studies that have assessed the impact of Kinesio taping on postural stability and by inference proprioception in team sports. The aim of this study was to establish if bilateral application of Kinesio taping of the ankles would improve postural stability in rugby union players. [Subjects] The participants were 31 healthy semiprofessional rugby players (age 19.57 ± 0.76 y; body mass 91.87 ± 11.81 kg; stature 1.82 ± 0.08 m). [Methods] Postural stability was measured using an experimental crossover study design. [Results] Significant improvements in overall stability, anterior-posterior stability, and medial-lateral stability were observed under the taped versus non-taped conditions. A secondary finding was that differences in postural stability may be associated with playing position, in that backline players exhibited significantly better overall stability under the non-taped condition compared with forward players. [Conclusion] These results suggest that Kinesio taping may enhance postural stability in a position-dependant manner in semiprofessional rugby players. From a mechanistic point of view, these findings may help to explain why Kinesio taping may be beneficial; however, the impact that the tape may have in contributing towards the prevention of ankle injuries is yet to be established.

[Purpose] The purposes of this study were to investigate the immediate and delayed effects of two directions of Kinesio taping (KT) on maximal isometric strength of the wrist and finger muscles of healthy adults and compare their differences. [Subjects] Nineteen healthy junior college students participated in this study. [Methods] The inhibition and facilitation KT techniques were separately used to tape on the dominant and non-dominant forearms of the participants, respectively. Maximal isometric strength of wrist extension, middle finger extension, and grip of both hands were measured before taping, immediately after taping, and after 24 h of taping (with the tape in situ). [Results] Compared with the baseline, the average maximal isometric strength of middle finger extensors increased considerably after application of the facilitation technique. No significant time effect was observed for measurement of middle finger extension strength on the dominant side or for wrist extension and grip strength on both sides. Significant differences between both taping techniques were observed for wrist and middle finger extension strength immediately after taping, and for middle finger extension after 24 h of taping. [Conclusion] The results suggest that the application direction of KT may have different effects on isometric muscle strength. Future studies involving a larger sample of subjects and a sham condition are warranted to confirm our findings.

[Purpose] This study examined the effect of taping the quadriceps femoris muscles of healthy college students on anaerobic muscle power (AMP) and the anaerobic threshold (AT) to analyze the functional value of taping on athletic performance capacity. [Subjects] Thirty male healthy college students were enrolled in this study. [Methods] The study was performed from April to May 2010 (for a month). Kinesio tapes, 5 cm in width, were applied to quardriceps femoris muscles of participants. AMP and AT tests were conducted a sports science research laboratory. The paired t-test was conducted to examine the significance of differences between before and after taping. [Results] Mean power, peak power, mean power/kg, peak power/kg showed significant increases after taping. The induction time of AT, and, VE, VO2, HR, VO2max at AT showed no significant improvements after taping, but RPE showed a significant improvement. [Conclusion] Taping of the quadriceps femoris muscles of healthy college students affected AMP but not AT suggesting that taping influences athletic performance capacity.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of forward head posture on ankle joint range of motion and static balance. [Subjects] The study subjects were on 51 healthy undergraduates (22 males and 29 females) who had not experienced cervical or shoulder pains, or hospital diagnosis of musculoskeletal dysfunction in the previous four weeks. [Methods] The cranial vertical angle (CVA) was measured to investigate forward head posture, and the Tetrax Portable Multiple System (Tetrax Ltd, 56 Miryam Ramat Gan, Sunlight, Israil) was used to measure static balance using the stability test index (STI). Distal dualer-IQ (JTECH Medical, USA) was used to measure ankle joint range of motion. [Results] Cranial vertical angle had an influence on ankle joint plantarflexion, but no influence on static balance. [Conclusion] Forward head posture was shown to transmit tension to the ankle joint through the superficial back-line, one of the myofascial meridians connected to the fascia, which suggests that tension in the neck muscles influence the ankle joints.

[Purpose] The objective of this study was to compare the active cervical range of motion (CROM) of asymptomatic subjects without orthosis with wearing cervical soft collars or with cervical 5cross-taping. [Subjects] Twenty-three asymptomatic subjects (13 males, 10 females) without neck or shoulder pain agreed to participate in this study. [Methods] The active neck movement (flexion, extension, and left and right rotation and lateral flexion) of the subjects was measured using a CROM instrument without orthosis, while wearing a cervical soft collar, and with cervical-5 cross-taping. [Results] All active neck movements with cervical-5 cross-taping were significantly reduced compared to without orthosis. All active neck movements while wearing soft cervical collars were significantly reduced compared to without orthosis and cervical-5 cross-taping. [Conclusion] These preliminary results suggest that cervical-5 cross-taping using Kinesio tape may allow more active neck movement than soft cervical collars and be more supported than without orthosis.

[Purpose] This study aimed to assess the correlation between lateral thrust and clinical symptoms after high tibial osteotomy and determine lower limb alignments that may decrease lateral thrust. [Participants and Methods] We included 54 patients (73 knees) who underwent high tibial osteotomy. Clinical symptoms, including the Japanese Orthopaedic Association score and the hip–knee–ankle angle measured via radiography, were assessed 12 months postoperatively. Lateral thrust was measured using three-dimensional motion analyses. Logistic regression was used to calculate the cut-off values with good Japanese Orthopaedic Association score and lateral thrust as dependent variables and both lateral thrust and hip–knee–ankle angle as independent variables. [Results] The lateral thrust cut-off was 3.1° (sensitivity: 0.83; specificity: 0.74; area under the curve: 0.76), while that of the hip–knee–ankle angle was 1.9° of valgus (sensitivity: 0.71; specificity: 0.81; area under the curve: 0.72). [Conclusion] Good clinical outcomes after high tibial osteotomy can be expected with a lateral thrust of ≤3.0°, indicating that the target hip–knee–ankle angle should be 2.0° valgus. In cases where valgus alignment is insufficient, lateral thrust may develop, which should be assessed using gait analysis.

[Purpose] To determine the effect of pulsed high intensity laser therapy (HILT) versus low level laser therapy (LLLT) in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. [Participants and Methods] This was a randomized clinical trial that included 30 females diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhea who were assigned randomly into two groups of equal numbers. The treatment was three sessions every cycle for three consecutive cycles, where group (A) received pulsed HILT and group (B) received LLLT. All participants were evaluated before and after treatment sessions by visual analogue scale (VAS) and at the end of treatment by pain relief scale (PRS). [Results] The results showed a significant decrease in the severity of pain in the two groups. Comparison between the two groups showed a statistically non-significant difference in the severity of pain and pain alleviation at the end of the treatment course. [Conclusion] Both pulsed HILT and LLLT are effective in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea, with no significant differences between the two modalities.

[Purpose] We aimed to identify possible solutions to enhance evidence-based practice (EBP) in rehabilitation professionals in Japan. [Participants and Methods] A three-round Delphi method was undertaken among a cohort of clinical therapists (328 physical therapists, 55 occupational therapists, and 6 speech therapists). In the first round, the participants listed possible solutions for promoting EBP, other than 12 solutions presented in a previous study; subsequently, a new list was created. In the second round, a newly-created list of solutions was presented, and the participants responded on a 5-point Likert scale on how much they agreed with the solutions promoting EBP in Japanese rehabilitation professionals. In the third round, the distribution of responses obtained in the second round was presented, and participant’s agreement was again assessed on a 5-point Likert scale. [Results] Across the three rounds, data were collected from 33.7% to 47.0% of all eligible participants. After the first round, 17 possible solutions were developed, and a list of 29 solutions was used in the second round. After the third round, 10 solutions reached the predetermined criteria for consensus. [Conclusion] In this study, ten possible solutions to promote EBP were proposed by the Japanese rehabilitation professionals.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the shoulder and elbow joint angles, upper limb angular velocities, and elbow varus torque when throwing balls of two different sizes. [Participants and Methods] The pitching motion of 26 junior baseball players was analyzed using an optical motion capture system. The balls used were a standard baseball and a small ball of equal weight. Shoulder external rotation/abduction and elbow flexion were measured. The maximum values of shoulder joint internal rotation, elbow joint extension, wrist flexion angular velocity, and elbow joint varus torque were also evaluated. The ball velocity was determined as an index of pitching performance. [Results] The shoulder external rotation and elbow flexion angles were higher when pitching with a small ball. The joint angular velocity was also significantly higher when pitching with a small ball for all items examined. The ball speed was significantly higher with the small ball. The maximum varus torque of the elbow joint divided by the ball velocity was significantly lower for the small ball. [Conclusion] For a junior baseball player with a small hand length, using a small ball enables pitching with low stress on the elbow joint.
