Sima-Guang 司馬光 is a government officer in the Northern Song 北宋 dynasty and a famous historian. He compiled Chinese history "Zizhitongjian 資治通鑑" and he wrote the book of a historical investigation. "Zizhitongjian-Kaoyi 資治通鑑考異" at the same time. This paper analyzed "Zizhitongjian-Kaoyi" in order to see how the history of Wuhu-Shiliuguo 五胡十六国 period in "Zizhitongjian" was compiled. Sima-Guang made reference to several books on the history of Wuhu-Shiliuguo period, especially "Shiliuguo-Chunqiu 十六国春秋." "Shiliuguo-Chunqiu" was 102 volumes, when it was compiled by Cui-Hong 崔鴻 in the Northern Wei 北魏 period. As time passed, it was scattered and lost. But it still remained in the Northern Song period. I looked through "Zizhitongjian-Kaoyi" and I could find "Shiliuguo-Chunqiu" an incomplete book."Shiliuguo-Chunqiu" that Sima-Guang could use, was a little over 20 volumes, when he compiled "Zizhitongjian."

This article reports my sabbatical at the Australian National University in Canberra, from April 2005 to March 2006. The main purpose was research work into the Japan-Australia trade relations from the mid 1950s on, the period when my PhD thesis stopped covering, at the National Archives of Australia. While my archival research culminated in the international symposium in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the 1957 Japan-Australia Commerce Agreement at the Annual Conference of the Australian Studies Association of Japan held in June 2007 at Osaka, my stay in Canberra also brought several other research products. The first is the postwar incremental change of the Australian society from the 'British race-patriotism' into the new one founded on the British tradition and the cultural diversity and generosity. The second theme is Australia's approaches towards nuclear disarmament that have been under the constraints of the US alliance and its status as world's major uranium producer. My third topic is the comparison of the market-oriented economic reforms from the 1980s to the 1990s between the progressive conciliatory stances by the Australian Labor government and the bigbang approaches by the New Zealand Labour counterpart.

The aim of this short report is to mention my academic experience at Oxford. The author had stayed at St Antony's College, Oxford, from April 2004 to March 2005, as a Nitobe fellow of the International House of Japan. This writing includes these three parts: the history of Oxford University, the outline of St Antony's, and its college life. First, in spite of its name, Oxford University is an ideal being not visible institution. It's a kind of federation of colleges, each an independent entity from the University. So it is impossible to understand Oxford without colleges. Everyone who belongs to colleges has a very strong identity to them. Secondly, St Antony's is quite a new college in the 'Dreaming Spires', i.e. Oxford. It means the college has international and 'liberal' atmosphere. The Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, which is one of the most active bases on Japanese Studies in UK, that is located within the college. Thirdly, We have to pay attention to the role of the Hall. In daily college life, the Hall provides not only meals but also an opportunity to get acquainted with new people. In the author's opinion, the Hall is exactly the heart of a college. Especially the High Table would be the most important event and function, which symbolizes the traditional British higher education.

Buddhism spreaded to China around the first century. After that Buddhism was accented to the Chinese society slowly and good, the Buddhist temple came to be constructed and even the Buddhist Scriptures had been translated to Chinese gradually. This paper analyzed mainly the historical documents from the first century through the fifth century, Dunhuang (敦煌) manuscripts and Turpan (吐魯番) manuscripts to know when the name of the Buddhist temple changed into "si 寺" from "ci 祠". The Buddist temple was called "ci 祠" in the Later Han (後漢), or Eastern Han (東漢) dynasty. In the third century, it has come to be called "si 寺" in the China mainland. However, it was still called "ci 祠" in the early fifth century in the Hexi (河西) region. Futhermore it was still called "ci 祠" in the late fifth century in the Turpan (吐魯番) region. The Chinese character "si 寺" standing for the Buddhist temple was from the name of the government office called "si 寺".

A great number of studies have been done so far on the history of Islam in the various fields of discipline. Among others, Oriental History has done a major contribution to the study, while very few by Comparative Religion, or the History of Religions. This article is an attempt to read the history of Islam in terms of the History of Religions, by which I mean to study religions by applying the general theories of religions. The theories I make use of in this article are "Holy Community" by J. Kitagawa, typology of religions "Prophetic" and "Mystic" by F. Heiler and "Fundamentalism."

With regard to the Russian "figure of mother and son", you probably remember first of all the icon of the Holy Mother and Son. It is a symbol of love, and is connected with the image of Christian salvation. Gorky's novel "The Mother" exists as the typical classic of Russian literature, in which is described the figure of the mother and son. This is connected to the image of the socialist revolution. In this paper I will focus on the figure of the mother and son in Valentin Rasputin's latest story "Ivan's daughter, Ivan's mother" and consider its significance. In the last scene of his short story "In the hospital" (1995) are quoted a few words of the song "Holy Rus' is inviting" written by father Roman: Bom, bom, bom-Where are on earth, Russian sons, Bom, bom, bom-Why did you forget Mother? Bom, bom, bom-Was it not you in this melody, that went to die in the steps of the parade? "Russian sons" and "Mother" in this song come out as a new unique 21st century Russian literary type in Rasputin's story "Ivan's daughter, Ivan's mother".

This study is a part of Research Project entitled "Cultural fusion and cultural conflict in the Gulf" sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Japan. The field-work was carried out in Dubai, The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) during July and August, 1987. U.A.E., like the other Gulf countries, has undergone drastic socio-economical changes since oil exploitation started. The huge oil money income has brought not only economic changes but also socio-structural and cultural changes due mainly to the number of foreign migrant workers. They have been immigrating to this area in response to the needs of manpower in the process of socio-economic development. In this paper, the topic of cultural fusion and cultural conflict is surveyed by focusing on the migrant workers in Dubai. Interviews with the migrant workers were conducted and their motivation for immigration to U.A.E., their impressions about life in Dubai, their daily problems, and their perspectives for the future were examined. After carrying out this preliminary research, we came to a tentative counclusion contrary to our original supposition. In spite of the co-existence of many different ethnic groups of migrant workers in Dubai, cultural fusion and cultural conflict are not occuring as much as we had expected. For the foreign migrant workers, economic and working conditions and creation of a new social-network in Dubai are the central issues of concern and have greater importance than cultural assimilation, such as learning the Islamic way of life or the Arabic language. The creation of a social network, in a way, functions as a strategy for resolving their daily problems and for adaptation to the life in U.A.E. without major modification of their own cultual background.
