In this paper, the declarations (player's oaths) by senior high school baseball players at Koshien stadium every year are analyzed from the viewpoint of the modification of the texts. In result, 26 texts from 1968 to 2010 are divided into three groups according to the time. First group (named "traditional type") consists of the oaths from 1968 to 1983, that is traditional and stereotyped version made up of almost the same vocabularies and expressions. Second group ("innovation type Ⅰ") is from 1984 to 2000, that has variety and individualities. Third group("innovation type Ⅱ") is from 2001 ahead, that has the same character as the former but is different in that has entertainer's viewpoint in the texts. In conclusion, the reason why this kind of modification has occurred is that "liberation from restraint" emerged among Japanese young people after 1980s, and furthermore, "players as entertainers" consciousness has also emerged after 2000s.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting accentual patterns of loanwords in Pusan Korean, a South Kyungsang dialect. Kenstowicz & Sohn (2001) have studied loanwords from English in the North Kyungsang dialect. They point out that accentual patterns of loanwords are determined by syllable structures. Based on their analysis, I show that syllable structure plays a crucial role in deciding accentual patterns in Pusan Korean loanwords as well. Further, I propose that segmental information like initial aspirated consonants affect accentual patterns.

This study is aimed at 1) to describe the accent of nouns in the Amakusa dialects of Japanese on the basis of our fieldwork study performed in seven villages in the Amakusa islands, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, 2) to propose a novel approach to the phylogenetic study of Japanese dialects based on their accent systems, and 3) by means of this approach, to investigate the phylogenetic position of the Amakusa dialects among the south-west Kyushu dialects. The results of our analysis revealed that goma 'sesame', nizi 'rainbow', kinoo 'yesterday', kokoro 'heart', and mado 'window' showed irregular accentual correspondences with other (non-Kyushu) Japanese dialects. The irregularity found in the former three nouns is shared by most of the south-west Kyushu dialects, whereas that in the last noun mado is shared only by the Amakusa dialects. On the basis of the results we proposed a tentative tree that indicates the phylogenetic position of the Amakusa dialects.

When we hear a Japanese sentence like Washi-wa idai-na hatsumeika ja 'I am a great inventor,' we can imagine an elderly man as the speaker of the sentence. Expressions that invoke a specific personality of the speaker, such as washi and ja, are called yakuwarigo 'role language.' This study examined how role language is processed by native Japanese speakers. We recorded the event-related potentials of native Japanese speakers as they judged the compatibility between a picture of a character and a sentence containing role language. Compared with matched pairs, mismatched pairs showed an N400 effect. This suggests that the lexico-semantic process plays a major role in determining the appropriateness of the use of role language, parallel to the use of honorific forms.

This paper discusses how to relate the so-called "urgent imperatives" denoted by the simple past form, -ta, and the simple non-past form, -(r)u in Japanese to the temporal meanings of -ta and -ru forms. The reason they are called 'urgent' is that they cannot co-occur with any future temporal adverbs even though they are future-oriented. This phenomenon is regarded as one of the modal interpretations that the simple tense forms have in the sentence final position, which are disputable in the study of tense in Japanese grammar. In previous works, two types of approaches to the modal usages of tense have been used: one is to situate the modal usages in the temporal ones; the other is vice versa. The urgent imperatives, however, are not analyzed enough in either approach because they are apparently idiomatic. In this paper, I show that 'urgency' can be ascribed to the basic temporal meanings of -ta and -ru; that is, the immediate past denoted by -ta and the immediate future denoted by -(r)u. Though the -ta form has both immediate and remote past interpretations and also the -(r)u form has both immediate and remote future interpretations, the interpretation of these forms is limited to the immediate past/future in some particular contexts (Takubo 2008, 2011). I argue that the interpretation of -ta/-ru is limited to the immediate past/future even though they have both remote and immediate past/future interpretations. In other words, I claim that the urgent imperatives should not be treated as idiomatic but should be explained compositionally by their temporal meanings and the contexts of utterances.

The discrepancy between the acceptability and the grammaticality of a sentence has been known for a long time, but has not been paid enough attention. If one seriously intends to do empirical research under the generative grammarian approach, it is quite important to know why there is such conflict and how it can be dissolved. This paper proposes a comprehensive model of linguistic activity, and suggests a possible solution.

This paper describes the accentual patterns of Sino-Japanese compounds in Nagasaki Japanese. By investigating the accentual patterns of actual and nonce Sino-Japanese compounds, I demonstrated that the accentual pattern of a Sino-Japanese compound is determined by the mora length of the second element of the compound. If the second element of a Sino-Japanese compound consists of one mora, the compound is produced with a falling pattern (Type A), otherwise it is produced with a flat pattern (Tone B). Since the same generalization holds also in Standard Tokyo Japanese, the result strongly implies that the accentual patterns of Nagasaki Japanese are influenced by the accentual patterns of Standard Tokyo Japanese.
