This paper examines the location and distribution of military land in the 26 cities which has the Army Headquarters of Division or Brigade in the 1930's. The area of military lands were measured on the city maps published in the 1930's. The total area of military lands in the cities which has the Army Headquarters of Division was much larger than that of in the cities which has that of Brigades. The distribution of those lands in each cities was divided into 2 types; the ones located on the former sites of feudal castle and the others in suburban area. These results could contribute the understanding of spatial influences of military location on urbanization processes in the modernizing period of Japan.

The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the masterpiece of the manuscripts made in medieval England. The Book is thought to have been made at the monastery of Lindisfarne in the kingdom of Northumbria. Eadfrith, the bishop of Lindisfarne (d.721), wrote and illuminated this Gospels with splendid skills which he might had studied in Ireland. And he made this Gospels under the influence of cultures from Irish and Mediterranean area. It is almost certain that the Gospels have been made for God and Cuthbert in the early 8th century. The reason why this Gospels have been made connects closely with the birth and expansion of the cult of St Cuthbert. And Eadfrith undertook this work to promote the Cuthbert's cult. After the birth of his cult, the Lindisfarne monastery needed a lot of fame in oder to establish the status as the leader of Northumbrian church. For this reason, Eadfrith bid the Lindisfarne monks together, Bede put the Life of St Cuthbert, and Eadfrith made this Gospels by himself. The making of the Lindisfarne Gospels must be considered under this historical context, and it is evident that the making of this Gospels constituted a very distinct landmark in the history of the Lindisfarne community and St Cuthbert's cult.

Cuthbert, a bishop of Lindisfarne, was one of the most important saint in the seventh century and a key figure in the ecclesiastical and political context of Northumbria. He was venerated for the christian virtues and the merit of faith. According to the decision of the synod at Whitby in 664, he led the community of Lindisfarne to accept the Roman Catholic rule and he consecrated as bishop of Lindisfarne in 685. After his death, his community enshrined him and vigorously promoted his cult in Lindisfarne opposed to Wilfrid's threat. Wilfrid, who was also seen as saint, ruled the Northumbrian church and had a lot of landed possessions and ecclesiastical powers, but he quarrelled with kings to expel twice. Through the development of the cult, the close connection was established between the community of Lindisfarne and Northumbrian royal family. Both of them had been bothered by Wilfrid, the community was eager for protections of the king and the king intended to set up Cuthbert as rival saint against Wilfrid. It was essential for them to collaborate each other. This connection prevented Wilfrid restoring his authority. As a result, the cult of Cuthbert could enhance the royal power with increasing the authority of Lindisfarne.

The purpose of this study is to pursue an approach to developing the snow melting systems on pavement, which utilizes the treated sewage. Snow melt on pavement provides a means of transportation for all the trip makers, including transportation-disadvantaged people, which can be viewed as a civil minimum in snowy and icy areas. In this snow melting system treated sewage with relatively high temperature is conveyed through pipes under target pavement and melts snow by heat conduction. Though other systems have been conventionally adopted for snow melting, this system can be a viable option in terms of cost. To demonstrate the feasibility, we first set the objective of snow melting capacity on a risk management basis, and confirmed treated sewage had sufficiently high temperature. Next, we conducted an experiment to measure heat capacity provided by treated sewage using the experimental pavement and pipes. We also showed this system has cost advantage over the conventional in case of a larger area. Finally, we pointed out the problem of scale formation in the pipes and the countermeasures.
