We develop quantitative evaluation method of airless spray by using entropy of gray scale image. Stroboscopic method is employed to visualize the spray. An undesirable "tail" region of the spray is detected as low image entropy area. As against the conventional visual judgment, the proposed method enables a quantitative evaluation of spray.

In this study, we implement a vortex method based on Object-Oriented Programming using Modern Fortran, well-known as Fortran 2003. Object-Oriented Programming features enable us to maintain, reuse and extend existing program source codes easier. First of all, we implement Doubly Linked List and related procedures including iterator and dynamic cast to store and refer data of vortex elements, which discretize the vortical field of flows. We implement a vortex blob method and apply the method to simulate a plane mixing layer to confirm its suitability. Implementation processes we performed are easier than and resultant source codes we created are simpler than those which are performed and are created through the procedural programming which is popularly used on the programming of numerical simulation methods, confirming the Object-Oriented Programming's suitability for the numerical simulation methods including the vortex blob method.

<p>Underwater micro shock wave generated from metal surface by irradiation of single pulse laser has been investigated and observed with shadowgraph method. In order to produce underwater micro shock wave, flat and concave glasses coated with 100 nm thick titanium have been used. In this experiment, we used relatively low laser intensity, ranged from 0 to 200 GW/m<sup>2</sup> and shock wave was generated due to photo-acoustic effect in metal induced by laser irradiation. Shock wave was focused immediately using concave surface and we confirmed the focusing effect by optical observation and pressure measurement. The strength of shock wave from concave surface has attained approximately twice of flat one.</p>

In the present study we investigate the relationship between various aerodynamic characteristics and attack angle α for FP (a flat plate), NACA0015 and iNACA0015 (the NACA0015 placed back to front) by numerical analysis and water-tank experiment at Re = 100 – 800. Then, we reveal the effects of α upon various aerodynamic characteristics such as the lift coefficient CL, drag coefficient CD and the lift-to-drag ratio CL/CD. In order to discuss these revealed α effects, we further visualize the flow around the airfoils in terms of the velocity vector, vorticity and the Q value at α = 0 – 30 deg., based on PIV analyses by water-tank experiment. Such results suggest that FP is similar not with NACA0015 but with iNACA0015 from an aerodynamic point of view.

The internal flow in a simplified heating,ventilation,and air conditioning(HVAC) model was calculated by large-eddy simulation(LES).The acoustic field generated from the flow in the HVAC model was computed by solving the Lighthill equation in the frequency domain,using the LES results to calculate the sound sources.The computed sound pressure level(SPL) agrees reasonably well with the experimental data of Wakahara et al.A maximum difference of about 7 dB at the frequency 800 Hz between the computed SPL and the experimental data was found.The reason of the difference will be investigated in detail in the next stage.

The authors invented the unique wind power unit composed of the large-sized front wind rotor, the small-sized rear wind rotor and the peculiar generator with the inner and the outer armatures. The rotational torques of both armatures/wind rotors are counter-balanced, while the rotational speeds and the directions are adjusted automatically in response to the wind conditions. The prototype unit is composed of the tandem wind rotors, whose front and rear diameters are 2 m and 1.33 m, and the double rotational armatures type synchronous generator. The unit was setup at the roof of an isolated building at Kitakyushu city in Japan. The field test results proved that this type unit may be effective to get the sufficient output if the profiles of the wind rotors and the peculiar generator are optimized.

We have investigated the wind turbine and two-dimensional wing performance in various fluctuating flows including pulsating flows and turbulent flows with different intensities and scales. As a result, the power outputs of the wind turbine in pulsating flows shows higher values compared to those in smooth steady flows. For a certain condition of turbulent flows, the power output of wind turbine show a higher value than those in smooth and other turbulent flows. In addition, the wing performance improved by turbulence, and the flow around the wing has changed by roughness. Therefore, the possibility that the turbulence with small scales can make an interference with the boundary layer around a turbine blade and improve lift performance is shown.

I will describe her life as the "brave story of a pioneer."

Aimed at improving the quality and the efficiency of the coating, we have investigated the motion of liquid particles in an actual airless spray by using a high speed video camera. In this study two-dimensional velocity vectors of the particle were quantitatively obtained by the mean shift algorithm and the particle tracking method. We show the statistical analysis for the particle size, the direction, and the velocity of the liquid particles in the actual spray, and discuss their roles on the quality and the efficiency of the paint coating.

Side jets, which are radial ejections, are formed at a near field in the low-density jet, such as a helium gas jet. Mixing of fluids between the jet and the ambient is enhanced at vicinity of the nozzle exit by the side jets. When the side jets are generated in a helium gas jet, the jet has periodically large velocity fluctuation in the potential core. The side jets were produced in uniform density jets by inputting periodic pulsation with a loudspeaker. The side jets in the pulsed air jets were visualized by using planar laser Mie scattering(PLMS), and the condition for generation of side jets was shown by the turbulent intensity, Reynolds number and non-dimensional frequency. Power spectra of velocity fluctuation in the pulsed air jet are similar to those in the helium gas jet if the side jets are generated.
