This paper clarifies the images of DIY/Sunday Carpenter, which spread in Japan from the late 1960s to the 1970s as a handicraft hobby carried out mainly by men, and how it took root throughout the country. As a result of a content analysis of the bulletin magazines of the Japan DIY Club, an organization that gained members up to 45,000 during this period, it became clear that various kinds of activities were represented as DIY/Sunday Carpenter, such as making furniture and maintaining and repairing houses. In addition, it became apparent that DIY/Sunday Carpenter at that time was described with the images of craftsman devoting himself to manual labor.
