The time capsule [Biological and Environmental Specimens Time Capsule] aims at the storage of biological and environmental data on contemporary earth until 1000 year future from now on. In order to make the samples kept in the capsule for ultra-long time useful in judging that of biological and environmental degradation of the earth comparing the data with 1000 year time difference, two conditions for the biological contents in the capsule are necessary they are: (1) oxygen free and (2) temperature below -60℃, which should strictly be fulfilled for 1,000 years. The ultra-long-term recorder has been developed which is energized by the stored energy of the materials. The time span [t] is regulated by the torsion creep behavior of pure copper. The pressure [P] in the capsule is to be monitored by a pen cylinder type pressure gauge, and temperature [T] by bimetal. All these three essential key values: P, T, in the capsule and time are to be recorded on the clean surface of metal plate with the scratch of the needles, which follows on each sensor. The extrapolation of the torsion creep data gives approximately 8 rotations on time scale shaft, which leads us to the 40mm transverse motion of scratch needles during 1000 year [3×10^<10>sec] lapse of time.

Trials for exploitation of solar cell using organic dye substances were undertaken. The natural organic dye substances isolated from spinach leaves, grape skin, and synthetic dyes such as porphyrin derivatives were examined as the typical of organic dye substances. Fine powdered titanium oxide grains adsorbed the dyes described above were sintered on fluorine-doped stannic oxide glass. The amounts of electricity generated by prepared solar cells were measured by using a hand-made solar box.

Fine powdered titanium oxide grains adsorbed the dyes described above were sintered on fluorine-doped stannic oxide glass. A variety of devices for preparing solar cells was done to result a solid and constant value of produced electricity.

Sodium cellulose sulfate (NaCS)-based polyurethane (PU) hydrogels were prepared from the solution of NaCS and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Water content (W_c) of the obtained PU hydrogels was less than 3.0 g g^<-1> and NCO/OH ratio was varied from 0.05 to 0.6 mol mol^<-1>. Phase transitions of NaCS and NaCS-PU hydrogels were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From DSC curves, glass transition temperature (T_g), melting peak at low temperature (T_<ml>), melting peak at high temperature (T_<mh>) and liquid crystal transition temperature (T_<lc>) were obtained. It was also confirmed that there were three kinds of water, non-freezing water, freezing bound water, and freezing water. T_g decreased in a W_c from 0.05 to 1.0 g g^<-1>, reached a minimum and then increased W_c from 1.0 to 3.0 g g^<-1>. The T_g lowest value increased with increasing NCO/OH ratio indicating that molecular motion was restricted by cross-linking. The nano level structures of NaCS and NaCS-PU hydrogels were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Luciferase gene (Luc) was introdeced into plants by using praticle gun methods and expression of the luciferase gene in the trasgenic Tobacco cells and leaves was studied by bonitoring lumineascence agter feeding the dsubstarate, luciferin. Luminescence in the cells and leaves transformed with pBE2113-luc vector, which contains a duplicated enhancer of caulifolwer mosaic virus 35s high expression promoter, was markedly stronger than that with pBI-luc and pMLH2113-Luc. The luminescence in the ransgenic Begonia leaves transhormed with pBE2113-luc vector using gold particle of 1.0 μm in deametor was higher than that using gold particle of 0.6 μm in deametor.
