It is difficult to fully automatize the materials handling process which is contained in many industrial processes. Although it needs devices that can operate in three dimensions, they have scarcely been investigated. Some basic informations to construct such devices are pressented in this paper.As human fingers are seemed to be the best model, the author analysed their function from the viewpoint of degree of freedom. The relations between fingers and objects are classified and the fundamental relations are selected out. Then, how the increase of the degree of freedom effects the function of fingers is analysed. Its results are given in chart. This chart is named “capability chart” by the author. A formula is introduced to estimate the function of fingers relating to their number and degree of freedom, and a calculated example is given. The results are as follows; the function of fingers becomes higher as their degree of freedom increases to some extent. When the degree becomes some number, the increase of the function is little, then one finger is added, the function increases as before.

Since 1962 we have been undertaking a research project on automation of sugar refinary under the contract with the Nagoya Seito Co. Ltd. The Project included survey, analysis, development, design and experiment. The results have been fully made use of in the operation line of the new Tokyo Sugar Refinary recently built in Shinagawa Wharf, Tokyo.There are many difficult problems particular to the control of sugar refinary. As of date, however, we believe this new refinary plant is one step forward in its automation and above the most advanced world level. This new refinary adopts sequence and computer controls. A nearly complete automatic operation is possible in the production line with various batch processes including, in particular, the boiling processes. Both feedback and feedforward controls are employed. For the first time in this kind of plant, an automatic production control was made possible from an over-all point of view.

Artificial hands have been investigated for various aims; one such aim is to use them for industrial robots for automation of material handling and assembling.In this paper, fundamental problems lying in the industrial robot are considered, and one prototype mode ldeveloped by the author is introduced.This artificial hand has the senses of touch, force and position. The signals from these detectors are processed logically, and are used for controlling the motion of the hand. This hand can perform five fundamental operations, and if a simple program composed of a sequence of fundamental operations and of position references is given, it can carry out a sequence of various operations automatically.Such artificial hands may be useful for flexible automation. Moreover, the usefulness of such hands may be largely increased if they are incorporated with artificial eyes which can detect positions and recognize patterns.

This study deals with contouring control system of machine tools, which uses electro-hydraulic pulse motors as its main part. First, the system's features are briefly given and the algebraic arithmetic type interpolator which is used in the system is described. Secondly, an analysis of the dynamic characteristics of thh electro-hydraulic pulse motor is given. Last, the error of the system connected to the machine tool is examined showing that the machining error will be greatly reduced by a proper use of the cutter's center path offset mechanism of the system.
