In this thesis, we consider the titles of books quoted "Takahyakushu' and "Koyoki' written by Konoe Sakihisa, who had authority of the culture of falconry from Sengoku era to the beginning of Edo era, during these eras falconry was very popular and a lot of Takasho were written. We also characterize the Takasho inherited by Sakihisa and explore the discourse of falconry from the latter period of Muromachi era to the beginning of Edo era. The book often quoted in "Takahyakushu," which was written for Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, is "Shobokusho." This is not a Takasho, but a Bukekojitsusho by Hosokawa Takakuni, and is very important as the main stream of that period. On the other hand, "Jimyoinsaishodonokyuki" is quoted in "Koyoki." "Jimyoinsaishodonokyuki" is the book inheriting the discourse of Saionji-ke whose family business is falconry.

This report introduces Japanese paintings of hawks and falconry, based on previous studies. Furthermore, in this report, hypotheses will be suggested regarding the features of Japanese hawk paintings with respect to the studies on the Chinese paintings. Since most studies on the paintings of hawks in Japan have developed through introduction and discussions of each individual work, much less comprehensive research results have been presented in the present circumstances. On the other hand, studies related to the Chinese paintings that significantly influenced the Japanese paintings, have achieved notable results. Thus, referring to the results of research into Chinese paintings of hawks, the formation and development of paintings, pictures and sculptures of hawks can be understood. In addition, some studies have endeavored to find the political intentions of works from the relationships between motifs and patrons, and these results have been reported by not only Japanese researchers, but by those overseas. In contrast to the significant progress of the research/studies on paintings of hawks, there are few studies investigating falconry paintings, which is one subject within the category of genre paintings. Among such studies, however, those of Riko IMAHASHI are important pioneering works; and, papers have been written citing IMAHASHl's studies. In recent years, moreover, previously unknown paintings of folding screens and picture scrolls are surfacing successively. In many cases, however, they are still being exhibited without discussion or analysis; hence, further comprehensive studies on hawking paintings are anticipated.

The purpose of this study is to show ways in which paddy fields transformed the natural environment during the Edo period by analyzing pictures drawn in that period in cultivators' agricultural manuals. The 17th century was a time of extensive reclaiming of land and construction of paddy fields in Japan. There was an enormous expansion of paddy fields on the plain with a corresponding increase in rice and other crop output, sufficient to contribute to increased commercial sale of crops. As a result, the population increased rapidly, but also experienced considerable economic growth. While the paddy field is a place to produce rice from the human viewpoint, from the viewpoint of the creatures and naturally growing plants, the paddy field is a waterside environment, too. Various creatures such as large and small animals, birds or fishes inhabit this environment, e.g., wild boars, deer, hawks, cranes, carp, snakes, frogs, and more. In the cultivated area, no pesticide was applied which might have poisoned such creatures. Therefore, the creation of paddy generated a new environment in which waterside creatures increased along with the construction of paddies in the Edo period. Did the number and variety of such creatures associated with paddy field really increase? I will investigate this question by analyzing Nōgyō-zue that depicted the scenery of the farm villages of the middle in the Edo period. I will pay attention to creatures drawn in these pictures to clarify the relationship between rural animal life in the Edo period and the ecosystem of the paddy field.
