This report relates to corrosion-fatigue tests of 12 sorts of Al-Zn-Mg alloys in 3% aq. solution of NaCl and the effects of prior-corrosion in the atmosphere (atmospheric corrosion), in the service water (running), and in 3% aq. solution of NaCl for 2 years on fatigue strengths of 12 sorts of aluminum alloys.The fatigue properties were examined with Ono's type rotating-beam fatigue tester, and the fatigue strengths were determined in 107 cycles.The corrosion-fatigue strengths of Al-Zn-Mg alloys were 5-6.8kg/mm2, and almost no effects of heat treatment on the corrosion-fatigue strengths were observed.The fatigue strengths of prior-corroded specimens had a tendency to decrease in the following order: atmospheric corrosion>3% aq. solution of NaCl>service water.However, for some materials, the value in NaCl solution was higher than that of atmospheric corrosion.Most of the reduction in fatigue strengths due to corrosion appeared during one year in the beginning. The average reduction factor of fatigue strength in atmospheric corrosion was 28%.

Effects of metal flow on mechanical properties particularly on fatigue strength of ZK60A forgings were studied. The forgings are the most strong in yield, tensile and fatigue strength in the longitudinal direction and weaken as the loading direction turns to the transverse direction. They have particularly the yield strength so weak as 13 to 15 kgf/mm2 that corresponds to only a half of the strength in the longitudinal direction. The maximum elongation is achieved at angles 45° to 60° to the metal flow direction. The fatigue strength σW is expressed as a function of tensile strength σB, σW/σB 0.87-0.07 logN. where N is cycles: ZK60A magnesium forgings have a greater effect of metal flow on strength than aluminum alloy and AZ80A magnesium alloy forgings.

The effects of the purity of water upon The formation and corrosion resistance of boehmite film were studied with electron microscope and electron microprobe analyzer.The following results were obtained.(1) Boehmite films formed in city water containing various kinds of impurities had smaller thickness and lower corrosion resistance and were more blackish as compared with those formed in deionized water.(2) The composition and corrosion resistance of boehmite films formed in deionized water were nearly constant independent of the value of specific resistivity, when its value was not lower than 100, 000 Ωcm.(3) As the results of study with electron microprobe analyzer, it was concluded that the boehmite films formed in city water containing Si and Ca elements showed blackening and the decrease in film thickness and corrosion resistance, all of which chiefly depended upon SiO2, but scarcely upon CaCO3.

Color, texture and the tactile senses are recognized as the evaluation factors for a metal surface. In the present, though those factors are widely used as the popular comprehensive indexes to characterize a metal surface, evaluation of these factors are mainly referred to the terms of touch or visual look. From a customer point of view, particular factors to characterize a metal surface and its numerical expression may not only be helpful to judge its commercial value, but also to avoid unnecessary trouble on judging its appearance. Moreover, these quantitative evaluations are able to improve reproducible accuracy. This paper describes the quantitative evaluation method of a surface texture for metals. As the specimens, aluminum alloy that is one of the popular metals of the exterior material for industrial products are used. The surface textures have been measured by a non-contact 3D surface profiler and the results have been compared with nickel silver alloy and stainless steel. First, the surface textures are measured by stylus method and optical interferometer method to find the relationship between those two measurement methods. Then, as x surface property parameters to express transcriptive property of shot blasted, upper material ratio Sr1 and lower material ratio Sr2 were concluded to be effective.

The morphological transition from planar to cellular interface in Al-Ti alloys occurs at a constant value of C0•R/G and the cell-dendrite transition occurs at a constant value of C0•R1/2/G, where C0 is the initial solute concentration, R growth rate and G temperature gradient. As the planar interface breaks down to form depressions, a rod-like cored substructure is formed in each cell when the interfacial morphology changes successively from depressions to irregular cells, elongated cells and hexagonal cells. The rod-like substructure is transformed into the dendrite as the cellular interface changes into dendritic. The length of rods and dendrites becomes shorter with an increase in C0•R/G. The cored region is enriched with Ti, and its content is about 2.5-4.0 times of the initial solute concentration. The matrix of cellular and dendritu interface is extremely depleted in the solute, and its concentration is about 1/3-1/5 of C0.The diffusion coefficient for the solute Ti in the liquid Al at the liquidus temperature is calculated to be 0.87×10-5cm2/sec.

For aluminum and its alloys are cmployed for constructional materials contact with steam, they must have superior corrosion resistance in it, but the investigations on the action of steam vapor on aluminum and its alloys almost have not been canied out in the past. This corrosion test were made on usual trade aluminum alloys to determine the resistance to corrosion in steam atmosphere by measuring the weight loss, and the decreasing of tensile strength and elongation during test.(1) As compared with Fe, aluminum and its alloys has become established high resistance to corrosion in steam.(2) High-purity aluminum, under steaming stmosphere, surpasses the other aluminum and its alloys in resistance to corrosion. This resistance increases with increase in purity. However, the effects of a few impurity, Fe and Cu, to the resistance to corrosion are to be considered.(3) It is unexpected that the resistance of 52S is following to high-purity aluminum.

Copper concentrate-ores were generally filled in jute bags for transportation by ships and trains from Peko Mines Co., Australia to Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Japan. The rationalization of shipping works for the ores was required, because there were dangers of ignition of accumulated bags due to heat generation of the filling ores when they were moistened and exposed to high atmospheric temperature.In February 1967, the "Spensa-maru" which had been built for exclusive transportation of copper, zinc, and lead ores, was put in commission. The ship solved the above problems by the application of palletization for avoiding the heat generation and ignition and also getting rationalization of shipping work.In designing the pallets, there were no other proper means than assuming uniform distribution of the load on the pallets. However, the practical distribution of the load was not always uniform. Sometimes, the stresses in frames are higher than those of calculated values; or deformation of lower deck-board of second floor pallet is caused by concentrated load due to rugged arrangement of jute bags. However, these stresses or deformation shall be neglected in the practical work, if they are small.As being understood from the above facts, the loading test must be conducted with the practical loads.Of course, special care shall be taken in the operation of fork-lift trucks, and the pallets must be equipped with replaceable parts against damages by accidents.
