The embrittlement of aluminum by liquid gallium was investigated by measurements of a tensile test, a microscope and EPMA methods. The fracture stress of aluminum, coated with gallium of less than 1 mg, or tested within 1 min after coating, varied widely. The fracture stress of aluminum decreased with increase in holding time after coating with gallium. The fracture stress of specimen removed gallium on surface was greater than that with gallium adhered to surface. The fracture stress of aluminum increased with increase in holding time at 35°C again, when gallium on its surface was removed after holding at 35°C for 300 min after coating. Ductile to brittle transition appeared within a range of temperature between 23°C and 27°C°Cunder the test in l min after coated with gallium. This temperature range was almost independent of strain rate. In the tensile test after holding at 35°C for long time, ductile to brittle transition was within the range of temperature between 0°C and 27°C.

Al-Si-Mg alloys have good castability and high strength can obtained by aging heat treatment. There are some reports about the age-hardening behavior of these alloys. However, the effect of additive elements on the age-hardening behavior with microstructure evolution in Al-Si-Mg alloys is not totally clarified yet. In the previous work, the effect of T5 heat treatment for age-hardening behavior and microstructure evolution in AC4C cast alloy were investigated. Fine rod-like precipitates which were reported in Al-Mg-Si alloy were observed near eutectic Si phase in AC4C alloy. Rod-like precipitates became coarser toward the center of α-Al dendrite. In this work, high purity AlSi-Mg alloys were fabricated, and the microstructure of the alloys in T5 condition was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In Al-7%Si-0.4%Mg (mass%) alloy aged at 473K for 7.2ks, lots of needle-like precipitates, which were identified as β'' phase, were observed near the eutectic Si phase. On the other hand, rod-like precipitates and granular precipitates were observed far from the eutectic Si phase. Based on SAED patterns obtained from the rod-like precipitates and granular precipitates, Those precipitates were identified as Type-A precipitates and Si phase, respectively.

Bauxite was chlorinated in molten salts using chlorine gas and carbon to produce Alcoa Electrolyte such as AlCl3-NaCl-KCl melt. Chlorine gas was mildly introduced at 820°C into the suspension of bauxite and carbon powder in NaCl-KCl eutectics. AlCl3-FeCl3-NaCl-KCl melts are obtained without significant loss of AlCl3, carbon and chlorine gas. Hematite in bauxite dissolves in molten NaCl-KCl salt. Chlorination of alumina is enhanced by ferric chloride. Selective chlorination of bauxite is performed with hydrogen chloride gas and carbon in NaCl-KCl salt bath to give FeCl2 not FeCl3. The selective chlorination to remove hematite as FeCl3 is also achieved when a large amount of bauxite is introduced in a small amount of molten salt.

We found that the aluminum surface was blackened in the boiling natural-water. Then, we examined the condition in which this discolouration occurred. As the experiments, aluminum and its alloys (1S, 2S, 52S, 61S, 17S) which were variously treated were boiled in the well-water, the distillated water and the well-water which was controlled PH. Table 1-11 and Photo. 1-11 show the results of these experiments. Summarizing these results, we have determined the conditions in which the discolouration occurres as follows.(1) There should be neither oxid film nor other films which prevent the direct contact of the water on the aluminum surface before boiling in the natural water.(2) Thc Tcmperature of water should be more than 80°C and the aluminum surface should be laid in the condition in which the oxid film is formed.(3) The water should have any metallic ions and these ions should be in the condition in which they are able to act sufficiently.The discolouration above mentioned seems to illustrate one of the delicate action of bare aluminum surface and to give us the kye with which we may be able to unlock the tightly closed door of the aluminum surface problems, for instance, activity and oxidation of aluminum surface and corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, etc.

The creep behavior at ambient temperature of typical h.c.p., b.c.c. and f.c.c. metals and alloys of annealed state were surveyed. Cubic metals and alloys demonstrated negligible creep strain under all stress ranges. In contrast, h.c.p. metals and alloys demonstrated significant primary creep behavior. In particular, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and CP-Ti metal showed significant creep behavior and accumulated large creep strain more than 1% in 90 s and 1600 s, respectively under 0.9 of 0.2% proof stress. After being cold-rolled, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and CP-Ti metal showed less significant creep behavior.
