In 2009, 100 years had passed since Faculty of Horticulture, Chiba University was established. To spread knowledgewhich has been achieved in these 100 years, university staffs and alumni will start a program, called 'EnvironmentalGardener' as a part of memorial events. The aim of this program is to spread technologies of horticultureand to enrich cultures of horticulture. A certifi cation is going to be given for people who fi nished this program. There are four courses for this program: fl owers, vegetables, fruits and garden plants. This is designed for studentsand members of society. The fl ower course will start September 2010 at fi rst. Each course has lectures on basicplant knowledge such as plant cultivation, plant physiology, ecology, soil, fertilizer, pest control and garden design,as well as practices at university farm.

White root rot of Japanse pear caused by Rosellinia necatrix was investigated in two orchards of the Center forEnvironment, Health and Field Sciences, Chiba University. The bait twig method coupled with PCR primers specificto the fungus indicated at least 28.9% of Japanese pear trees were infected with the pathogen. Because the detectionefficiency of the method is often less than 80 % , the disease was likey more prevalent than the detectedsamples in the orchards. Furthermore, Japanese pear trees that R. necatrix was detected had significantly shorternew shoots than trees that the pathogen was undetected, showing negative impact of the disease infection on thegrowth of host plants. Genetic polymorhisms of R. necatrix isolated from the orchard and other areas of Japan, inaddition to kin speceis: R. aquila and R. compacta, based on six UP-PCR primers exhibited no identical polymorphicpatterns among these Rosellinia isolates. This result suggests that R. necatrix of the orchard is genetically differentfrom isolates living in other areas of Japan.

Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, which characterized elastic properties of a material, were measured bymeans of compress utensil and digital images captured by digital camera, and the elastic values were evaluated. Atissue of boiled Japanese radish and carrot root, which is too fragile to measure their Poisson's ratio by traditionalmethods, was used as sample materials. Cylindrical samples were cut out of the tissue using a precise apparatusand their dimensions were set to 15mm height and 30mm diameter. The samples were then compressed. The stressof the samples against compression was measured using a creep meter. The compressed deformation of the sampleswas captured by a digital camera and accurately analyzed by high resolution digital images. The Poisson's ratio wascalculated from differences in the sample deformation in digital images. A Young's modulus was also calculatedfrom the compressed deformation and the stress. As a result, the Poisson's ratio of boiled Japanese radish wasfound to be constant or slightly decrease with boiling elapsed time. The Poisson's ratio of carrot also decreasedwith boiling, and its value was smaller than the Japanese radish's. On the other hand, the Young's modulus for eachsample decreased sharply when boiling started but after 4 minutes boiling it was stabilized at low values.
