It is reported in this paper that the combined addition of 0.03% Nb and 0.55% Mo in quenched and tempered steel has shown such a high strength increase that can not be deduced from the present knowledges. It is also investigated whether there is any other combination effects between elements of VIa or Va family and elements of VIa family in the periodic table, as in the case of Nb and Mo. 1. It is found that Nb-Mo added steels have the largest combination effect, Ti-Mo, Zr-Mo and Nb-Cr steels have a slight effects, and Ti-Cr, Zr-Cr, Nb-W steels have none of the combination effect. 2. The reason why such combination effect occurs has been investigated. It is found that, in the case of combination having such effective combination effect, a large number of, and a great amount of cubic duplex carbide particles of IVa or Va element containing VIa element in it precipitate in the course of tempering, and it is infered that such duplex carbides result in the great combination effect of the steel. 3. The extraction method of Nb or V precipitates from steels is investigated, and it is found that the best is the (1+1) HCl aq. extraction method.

The lubrication by various cereal flours, such as wheat flour, rice flour, and so on, was studied to develop a nonpolluting lubricant for sheet metal forming. The lubricants were prepared in the following way. (1) Each cereal flour was dissolved in water at several concentrations. (2) Each suspension was coated on a titanium sheet. (3) The specimens were dried and cereal particles, thus, remained on the both surfaces of a specimen. The performance of these lubricants were evaluated by the Erichsen cupping test. Most of the flours show higher Erichsen values than grease. Furthermore, the cereal particles on the deformed specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and analyzed by electron probe microanalyzer. The observations suggest that the starch particles covered with protein and lipid can reduce the friction between dies and a specimen.

Orientation distribution in the 17%Cr stainless steel rough rolled with inter-pass time of 10s (specimen A) and 30s (specimen B) respectively were investigated utilizing SEM-ECP (selected area electron channeling pattern).<BR>Large colonies, groups of grains with the same orientation, of {100} <011>orientation are found in the specimen A after rough rolling. It is proposed to be formed by the poor static recrystallization during rough rolling due to the short inter-pass time and the suppression effect of static recrystallization caused by the &alpha;-&gamma; transformations immediately after the final pass of the rough rolling.<BR>Large ridging is observed in the cold rolled and annealed specimen A.<BR>The cause of the large ridging is considered to be due to the large colonies of {100} <011> orientation inherited from the rough rolled stage and scattered asymmetrically along the central line of the specimen thickness.

高炉耐火物の損傷機構と対策,および耐火物侵食診断技術の現状について概説した.<BR>耐火物は種々の原因によつて損傷されるが,いずれにおいても,何らかの形で炉内温度変動が関与しており,損傷の直接原囚として,遠因として,あるいは加速要因として作用する.従つて,炉況の安定が耐火物損傷防止の基本であり,また逆に損傷防止が炉況の安定につながることから,耐火物の寿命延長と安定操業は不可分の関係にある.<BR>また損傷機構の解明は,耐火物の材質・構造選定の上からも重要であり,このため損傷過程にある耐火物サンプルの解析あるいは試験室的な損傷状況の再現試験が有力な手段となろう.<BR>診断技術については,単に侵食量の推定だけでなく,れんが内で生じる現象,たとえば,き裂の発生,れんがの変質,溶銑の侵入,付着物の形成などの検出,推定まで含めた診断技術の開発が必要である.

SUS304鋼板に特有の微小な表面欠陥である粒界浸食溝について,熱延鋼板の焼鈍,酸洗および冷間圧延時の生成挙動について検討し,以下の結果を得た。<BR>(1)熱延鋼板の焼鈍,酸洗における鋼板表層の粒界浸食溝は,焼鈍後の鋼板冷却時に生成し,酸洗により深さおよび幅ともに拡大する。<BR>(2)粒界浸食溝の生成に鋼板表層のCr欠乏層が関係する。<BR>(3)冷間圧延後の粒界浸食溝の低減に,ロール径,潤滑の有無,ロール粗さ,および圧下率が大きく影響し,本実験条件の範囲では圧延速度および圧延油の粘度の影響は小さい。<BR>(4)ロールバイト内部での粒界浸食溝の挙動について,ロールバイト入側では粒界浸食溝が口を開き拡大する。ロールバイト中央から出側にかけては,粒界浸食溝への圧延油封入量が影響し,少ない場合は粒界浸食溝が変形して平滑化しやすく,多い場合はさらに拡大するとして説明される。

Hot slabs after the slabbing mill are at a mean temperature of 1000℃ and have the sensible heat of 160×10^3 kcal/t-slab. The main features of a Slab Cooling Boiler (SCB) are the recovery of the sensible heat to steam (16kg/cm^2G) by mean of heat radiation from the surface of hot slabs, and continuation of cooling process of almost every kind of slab. The first installation of an SCB was completed at Slabbing Mill No.2 in Mizushima Works of Kawasaki Steel Corporation and it has been operating successfully since March, 1976. The capacity of the heat recovery in this SCB is 72000kcal/t-slab. It is equal to or greater than the heat consumption of rimmed and semikilled steel in the soaking pit. This paper discusses the basic heat transfer experiments performed under this development, the basic planning of the installation, the outlines of the system, and some results of the operations.

The phosphorus in the iron and steel gives most injurious effect on their properties as well as sulphur, so that it is encouraged to eliminate the phos-phorus as lower as possible in their manufacture.<BR>There are many literatures as to the effects of phosphorus on the mechanical properties of steel, but as its effects change by the amount of carbon and other impurities in it, it is impossible to specify the limit of phosphorus content which is not objectionable to the properties of steel, and also it is impossible to express the change of mechanical properties by the increase of phosphorus content.<BR>The author made the phosphor-irons which contain the phosphorus from 0.014 to 0.91 per cent with very small amount of carbon and other impurities, and he investigated the effect of phosphorus on the mechanical and physical properties of iron.

The specimens of manganese iron which contains up to 3.82% of manganese are made by the melted iron obtained from the sponge iron by hydrogen reduction with the metallic manganese in the market. Ten ingots of different manganese content are forged into the proper shape for the investigation. The measurement of electric conductivity, the mechanical testing and the microscopic investigation on the specimens were carried on as forged, annealed and quenched conditions.<BR>The electric resistivity of the annealed sample increases 0.6 microhm by incrensing 0.1% of Mn and that of the quenched sample is little higher than annealed ones The tensile strength and the elastic limit gradually increase up to 2% Mn, proportionally to the manganese content and over 2%, the ratio of increase is remarkable. In the quenched sample, these increase is marked up to 2% Mn, over 2%, the rate of increase in tensile strength is reduced and the elastic limit decreases suddenly. The elongation and the reduction area decrease exceedingly up to 0.2% Mn, over 0.2% they do not show much decrease by increasing the manganese content and over 2.2% Mn show sudden decrease. In the quenched specimens the rapid decrease of the reduction area is recognized increasing manganese under 0.67% and by increasing more manganese there is not much change in elongation and reduction area. But there is shown sudden decrease from 2.8% to 3.8% Mn in which malleability can hardly be recognized.<BR>The impact value is markedly reduced as the manganese content decreases. Especially in the annealed condition, this phenomenon is more marked, in 0.7% Mn it is 3kg. -meter. Then as the manganese content increases it suddenly goes up and reaches maximum, 13kg. -meter, in 2% Mn. Over this content of manganese it shows sudden decrease and in 3.8% there is almost no value in all conditions.<BR>In the micro-scopic investigation, the structure of low manganese specimens in annealed condition consist all ferrite crystals. When the manganese content increases to about 2% some martensitic structure appears and in 3.8% manganese it changes completely to martensite. In the quenched condition, the martensitic structure appears already in 0.677% manganese and the structure becomes completely martensite in 2% manganese.

Apparatus of the high voltage a. c. arc source (4400-2A; 2200V-4A) as the light source of spectrographic analysis was designed and manufactured, and the quantitative spectrographic analysis of manganse, titanium, silicon, nickel, chromium, and arsenic in steel was carried out by it. It was ascertained that the quantitative analysis which hsd been impossible for small amount of the above elements in steel in the usual spark discharge method, became possible in high sensitivity and about 3-8 percent reproducibility by the above apparatus.<BR>As for the other characteristic, it was proved that there was practically no continuous background and few loss of testpieces on account of a lower temperature of the electrode.

Local temperature and voltage in the molten flux and metal pool beneath the electrode of ESR porcesses were measured directly by a bare hot junction of W-WRe thermocouple.<BR>The temperature in the flux during remelting was almost uniform at 1750&plusmn;30&deg;C. No temperature gradient was found at the metal pool-flux interface. The temperature in the metal pool decreased smoothly downward in the pool with a platea at 1500&deg;C which was the liquidus temperature of the steel used.<BR>The iso-voltage line was densely distributed at the electrode-flux interface and broadened toward the metal pool-flux interface. Most of the &ldquo;Joule heat&rdquo; in the flux was generated very close to the electrode. However, Faradaic heat generation at the electrode-flux interface was hardly found.<BR>It is suggested from the experimental results that refining processes, not only slag-metal reaction but also inclusion removal take place mainly at the metal pool-flux interface. Because the temperature in the flux was uniform even with the localized heat generation, a violent convection should exist in the flux.<BR>One of the driving forces for the convertion, the pinch effect of the current, was calculated. The selection of the proper voltage and current in order to have a good shape of the metal pool was suggested on an I-V diagram.

Exergy analysis was conducted on three ironmaking systems which were conventional ironmaking, direct reduction-electric furnace and smelting reduction systems. The exergy analysis is better than an enthalpy balance or a heat balance because exergy can express the quality of energy and evaluate different forms of energy like chemical, thermal, pressure and mixing energy by a unified measure.<BR>According to the calculated results for the specified conditions, the smelting reduction system was the lowest in net exergy loss, however, the highest in overall output exergy. The development of the efficient heat recovery process is therefore required for this system. The direct reduction-electric furnace system was the highest in net exergy loss. However, nonfired pellets were found to be effective to reduce net exergy loss. In the conventional ironmaking system, net exergy loss of its constituent processes significantly depended on the injection rate of pulverized coal and on the charging amount of nonfired pellets.
