Nowadays, various signalized intersections with bicycle lanes designs are available for implementation. However, no safety comparisons have been made between these various designs. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the various designs available. In this study, intersection designs from Western countries are investigated to determine the safety measures available. Then the safety and comfort are compared with left-hooks being focused. Five patterns were selected including (1) Mixed traffic with left-turning motorist; (2) Left-turn in the intersection for motorist; (3) Bicycle signal; (4) Advanced stop lines for bicycles; and (5) Bicycle box. The five intersection patterns were prepared at an experiment site, and human subjects consisting bicyclist and motorist were traveled on the specified route freely. Questionnaire surveys and video observations were used for data analyses. The results show that (1) Mixed traffic with left-turning motorist is the safest and (3) Bicycle signal is the most comfortable intersection design.

Motorcycle has its advantage of price and mobility to become the main transportation mode in Asia countries where there are high density of population and the economic development falls behind the developed countries. When people have enough economic capability to buy a motor vehicle, the car and the motorcycle have a relation of substitution. It is also a major work to develop a Multinomial Logit Model of motor vehicle chosen. The variables of cost in Multinomial Logit Model are insignificant to the models, and car owners and motorcycle owners usually underestimated the expected cost of another type of vehicle. In sensitive analysis, we can find that three utility factors, such as travel time reliability, convenience and safety are the major reasons influenced the ownership of motor vehicle.

This study evaluates the impact of the business interactive accessibility (BIA) by high-speed railway (HSR) of Japan. The BIA by HSR is a potential interaction for business purposes by HSR, based on the accessibility. Socio-economic conditions affect the BIA, but they have been only considered partially in the accessibility of previous studies. This study develops new variables, Densely-Buoyant District (DBD) at the micro-level and Densely-Buoyant Prefecture (DBP) at the macro-level. The indices denote the BIA considering socio-economic conditions: firms, workers, business scale, and distance between firms within a region. To examine the impact of DBP by HSR, we utilize the production function including DBP, prefecture-fixed effects, and time-fixed effects. The result suggests that DBP enhanced by HSR increases productivity. DBP of the secondary industry and tertiary industry enhances productivity, but not the primary industry. Therefore, the BIA by HSR in the secondary and tertiary industries contributes to regional growth.

Consignors, consignees, and freight forwarders need procedure status information on import and export containers, such as customs clearance, not only within a specific country but also across relevant countries in order to optimize supply chain management. In this paper, we review the current situation and literature on the sharing of procedure status information using IT systems. After clarifying issues in this regard, we present an IT system we have developed for sharing procedure status information in real time among Port Community Systems across countries. Finally, we discuss the issues and prospects in the development of the IT system. We conclude that, at present, it is beneficial to apply a decentralized system architecture in the sharing of procedure status information across countries without attaching any additional devices such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags.

The absence of a comprehensive policy to address the problems faced by the local three-wheelers (tricycles) became obvious when the Clean Air Act was implemented in January 2003, requiring all motor vehicles to comply with the exhaust emission standards equivalent to Euro 1. The National Center for Transportation Studies was commissioned to develop standards and baseline references for motorcycles and tricycles to facilitate compliance. The objectives are to a) establish baseline information on tricycle drivers and passengers; b) develop standard configuration in the design for the conversion of motorcycle into tricycles; c) develop emission test protocol applicable to local tricycles; and, d) determine the effects of various fuel-oil mixtures for 2-stroke and 4-stroke motorcycles. A comprehensive study of tricycles and its users across Metro Manila was produced including sidecar designs and prototype, real-road test and chassis dynamometer simulation data.

Speeding contributed 60% of road crashes in Malaysia every year. The automated speed enforcement (ASE) system was piloted in 10 blackspots area across the states of Selangor, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on 22 September 2012. This study was aimed to measure the drivers’ speed compliance at Lebuh Sentosa, Putrajaya where ASE camera was installed. Spot-speed studies conducted in October, November 2012 and February 2013, respectively revealed more than 70-90% compliance at the treatment site (ASE camera installed). However, less than 50% of drivers comply with the speed limit at the control site (ASE camera not installed). At treatment site, the 85th percentile speed was less than 70km/h but it was above 70 km/h at the control site. Moreover, we found that the effect of the ASE camera increases over the time. This implies that the ASE system has successfully reduced the speeding incidents at the blackspot area.

Motorcycle taxis have been emerging in developing countries, especially developing Asian countries, as an informal public transport service. It could provide a fast, flexible, and cheap transport service to the general public. At the same time, it may also be main sources of income for the urban poor. Unfortunately, wider socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the service have never been understood fully. Regulations on the service have been lacking as well. This study aims to understand the main characteristics of the service, explore its broader impacts, and identify its possible roles in the future urban transport system. Questionnaire surveys were conducted in Hochiminh City, Vietnam in 2012 that covered 400 users, 100 operators or drivers, and 20 stakeholders. Based on the results, the study suggests necessary changes in the service business model and regulatory measures to improve the image and the quality of the service.

Oil vulnerability emerged as a transport policy concern during the period of higher oil prices circa 2003 to 2014. This paper assesses and compares 11 Asian Pacific cities of different size regarding their level of oil vulnerability. A scorecard ranking method is developed, building from more established vulnerability concepts of 'exposure', 'sensitivity' and 'adaptive capacity' based on census data, transport agency datasets and previous international studies. The results show city-states such as Hong Kong and Singapore are the least vulnerable despite their complete reliance on imported oil. Conversely, South-East Asia's growing megacities such as Jakarta, Bangkok and Manila, with increasing motorisation, insufficient public transport supply and lower income levels are likely to be the hardest hit in the event of any oil supply shortfall. Implications of this research include that cities aspiring to be oil-free must curb private motorisation and devote their resources towards public transport.

Road accidents are major problems resulting in loss of life and property. Schools are accident-prone locations because majority of road users are students understand about traffic rules. This research aimed to investigate the occurrence of road and pedestrian accidents at primary and secondary schools in Bangkok, Thailand. This research was collected statistical data on road traffic injuries and imported the collected data into Geographic Information System (GIS). Then, Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) was applied to analyze data of 12 schools in Bangkok Metropolis Administration areas. The results showed that a majority of road accidents occurred in urban areas, crowded areas and intersections with heavy traffic. The suggested solutions were that knowledge of understanding of traffic rules should be promoted among students and a traffic sign consistent with student's learning behavior should be provided.

At year 2013 the development of Kertajati Airport at Kabupaten Majalengka, West Java Province will finish and ready to operate. West Java province has great potential in produce export commodities by air cargo as like vegetables, fresh fish, fruits, cutting flowers etc, though till now only 1.29% of that production has export. If the export scenario will reach 10% of production at 2013, so it needs supported by 788 cargo aircraft equal with Boeing 747-400 class (2 aircraft/ day) and 10.910 cargo aircraft equal with Boeing 737-700 (30 aircraft/day). In financial view, this cargo aircraft movement will give revenue to the Kertajati airport management through Pelayanan Jasa Pendaratan, Penempatan dan Penyimpanan Pesawat Udara (PJP4U), which at year 2035 estimation will reach 159,806,132,113 rupiahs. By considerate this air cargo financial analysis, it feasible as soon to build and operate the special cargo airport as export gate for West Java and Indonesia.

For Indonesia cities, walking mode, is not yet preferred one because of lack of walking facilities. Walking assessment is needed to evaluate how the walking infrastructure and environment can encourage more walking. The research objective is to develop is walkability measures using the concept of walkability index with case of Bandung city. The index was considered as the quality parameter of walking facilities for ease to walk. Four city areas were used with nine parameters to assess the index. Based on the parameters, a scoring system was developed and to complete it, a survey form was developed and then filled up as an inventory survey along the dominants walking routes within theoretical catchment area of 800 meters from the center area. Research findings show that index for the study areas spread was relatively same. However, detail investigations on the index's parameters showed that were critical condition for walking facilities improvement.

The necessity of shifting the policy focus from supply-side initiatives such as physical-capacity expansion to demand-side initiatives including ease of congestion is newly rising as a compelling method of improving the general ride quality of the metro users. In an effort to catch up with such shifting trend, a system schematic that will update the congestion status of the metro lines via mobile devices is suggested through this study, along with the development of a smartphone application to realize this service idea. The developed smartphone application allows the metro passengers to identify the congested area of each station platform and to receive information on the congestion level of each train and car. Through such assistance, the metro congestion information system can improve the overall convenience of the metro passengers by helping them identify the congestion level across the metro lines.

Excessive growth of motorcycle in Indonesia resulting a problematic to the society particularly road users. Three motorcycles market rank are China, India then Indonesia. Aggressively, motorcycles industries expanded their manufacturing capacity to meet the local market and overseas, as well as dealers and agents were intensively conducting distribution and tempted marketing. Social and economic impacts of motorcycles use may include: economics growth, traffic accident, traffic jam and the environment impacts. This paper outlines some policy instruments that are possibly applied to control motorcycles negativity impact. Besides its utility, motorcycles growth and usage need to be restricted, effective policy instruments should be sought in order to minimize risk and protect the public interests. Some research agendas for the continuation of the study are also outlined.

A study using permeability as the main parameter was performed to examine the drainage and clogging behaviors of different pervious concrete mixes used for pavement construction. This paper presents the findings of the clogging performance of the pervious concrete mixes against possible clogging materials found in Singapore roads. Clogging was created by introducing clogging materials progressively into the pervious concrete tested. A constant-head test was used to determine the permeability of the pervious concrete at different stages of the clogging test, and the clogging performance was determined by monitoring the reductions in permeability as clogging developed. The clogging potentials of different pervious concrete mixtures are represented and compared in terms of the deterioration trends of their respective permeability as the clogging process progresses.

This paper investigates the effects of road hump on traffic volume and noise level in a residential area in Kuala Lumpur. Field surveys were administered to measure data on traffic volume and noise level at three selected roads at Taman Keramat residential area in Kuala Lumpur. Measurement on noise levels such as LAeq, LAFmax, and LAFmin and traffic volume were undertaken for about 12 hours. The findings show that the highest traffic volume (563 vehicles per hour) and the highest noise level (75dB(A)) was measured at Road 1. The correlation analysis indicates a similar pattern in the relationship between traffic volume and noise level especially at Road 2 and Road 3. Finally, this paper concludes in drawing attention to conduct further studies on the effects of road humps in other residential areas in Kuala Lumpur to implement measures for a pleasant, harmonious and safe living environment for the community.

To evaluate pro-poor growth policy we assessed the applicability of several poverty measurement methods. We selected and applied the methods for evaluating transport infrastructure development in Indonesia during the transition period of governance reforms and decentralization. We used mobility as non-income poverty indicators in 1995, 2000 and 2005 to rank level of compliance with pro-poor growth policy. Surprisingly, we found that each method produced different ranking. In general, during the transition period from 1996 to 2005, the transport infrastructure development in Indonesia was comply with pro-poor growth policy. However, from 2000 to 2005 the growth become anti-poor. We conclude that individual measurement method is insufficient to evaluate pro-poor growth policy. Therefore, a robust and comprehensive measurement tool is needed. The tool will enable us to maintain the appropriate distribution of development benefit to the poor and the rich.

The impact of vehicle emissions on the global climate has drawn increasing concern in the past few decades. Patterns of housing development determine travel behaviors, thus affecting transport-related greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we establish a bi-level model to describe the relationships among housing allocation, traffic volume, and CO2 emissions using a continuum modeling approach. The user-equilibrium condition is achieved in the lower-level, and the minimum CO2 emissions are obtained by optimization the housing allocation in the upper-level. We consider a hypothetical city with one central business district (CBD) and a road network that is densely distributed outside of the CBD. Several commuter classes with different values of time are considered. The finite element method, the Newton-Raphson algorithm, and the convex combination approach are applied to solve the constrained optimization problem established in the bi-level model. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

This study applies a multiple discrete-continuous extreme value (MDCEV) model to analyze tourist's time use behavior involving multiple activities. The MDCEV model is applied because it has several advantages over other existing time use models, including the joint representation of participation in multiple activities and the allocated time, diminishing marginal utilities (satiation effects), and different baseline utilities. Application analysis is carried out using a data collected from tourists in Japan. Influential factors related to time use in 7 activity categories are explored. Concretely speaking, individual attributes including age, employment status, residential area, travel experience, and trip-related attributes including travel mode, travel party, travel season are found to be important influential factors. It is also observed that the level of satiation is high for shopping activities and low for sport and hot spring activities.

Factors influencing poly-centric employment formation in metropolitan regions are identified and explained. Less is known about the dynamics of change in cities of the developing world so a comparative study was proposed that was successfully funded by EASTS International Collaborative Research Activity (ICRA). A common analytical framework is outlined. This paper presents preliminary empirical findings for rank-size distributions of employment and for employment specific preference functions for the journey from work to home. Comparative findings are presented and interpreted for Bangkok, Canberra, Dalian, Delhi, Istanbul, Sapporo, Sydney, and Tokyo. Directions for on-going research are outlined.
