The authors made the survey of usual farm works for improving the cropping system as a part of the researches on the greenification of the loess plateau in China.In this paper, we described social and natural conditions of the loess plateau and agricultural indices of the surveyed district, and then the results of the survey which was carried out on the sequence of crops at one village.It was estimated that there were two kinds of crop-rotations. One was 4 years rotation, i.e. pes→wheat→millet or flax (edible oil), and another was 5 years rotation, i.e. pea→wheat→wheat→wheat→millet or flax (edible oil).Specific characters of estimated sequence of crops were discussed from the view points of trapping and holding rain-water in soil, fertility of soil, securing of food and edible oil, and seasonal dispersion of labor force.

The fluctuation of the surface, or relative depth of water within a paddy field, was related to yield and quality of the rice. A 0.5ha-transplanted paddy field having the fluctuation of elevation of about 100mm was used, and the level of water was monitored at several points of observation in the field. Following conclusions were obtained based upon these measurements for two years.1) There was a slight tendency of greater yields at lower elevations, although it was not statistically significant. The yield components varied among the elevations; at the lower elevations, the number of panicles per hill-plant and the number of grains per panicle were greater, and vice versa the weight of kernel and the percentage of ripened grains.2) The protein content in the kernel was significantly greater at lower elevations, which can be related to the smaller weight of the kernel and percentage of ripened grains mentioned above. The greater protein content could be also ascribed to continuous intake of nitrogen, as a result of continuous submergence of water on the soil.3) There was a case that at poorly drained intermediate elevations in the middle of the field, the protein content was as high as at lower elevations. This implied that the management of the water level or drainage was essential as well as the leveling of the paddy field, so as to produce the rice of as uniform and low protein content as possible within the field.

We examined how the long-term manure application and reduced tillage had exerted influence on the population dynamics of soil mesofauna in the field. Over the cultivation period of corn (Zea mays), we collected soil samples from the four types of field, where managed with the different combination of manure or fertilizer application and conventional or reduced tillage, at regular intervals. Then soil mites and collembola were extracted by using tullugren apparatus. Mites and collembola were classified into several groups mainly on the order or family level, to calculate the density of each group.Fungivorous species were dominant in every field. Although the reactions of mites and collembola were different among the groups, the density of both mites and collembola were higher in the manure applied plots than in the fertilizer applied as a whole. In particular, in the plot where manure application and reduced tillage combined, the densities of them were higher than other combination plots remarkably.These results correlate positively with the fungal biomass in each treatment plot apparently. And predatory mites density also correlates positively that of fungivorous species. It is considered that manure application or reduced tillage may support to maintain the population of predatory macrofauna on higher trophic level, by increasing mites and collembolan as their food resources.
