An ion-exchange resins were treated for I h by an aqueous solution of MgSO4 with a concentration of 1 mol dm-3 and they were carbonized for 1h in a high purity N2 gas at the temperature range from 300 to 1000°C. For the obtained spherical carbon containing MgO, the bactericidal effects for Escherichia coli were studied by colony count method. From XRD measurements of carbonized resins, MgO of cubic phase was detected and no graphite was observed. The amount of MgO in the carbon samples was a constant value of 30wt%, irrespective of the carbonization temperature of an ion-exchange resin exchanged by Mg2+. From the results of bactericidal tests, it was found that the antibacterial activity increased with the increase of the crystallinity of MgO dispersed in carbon samples, i.e., the increase of carbonization temperature. On the sample carbonized at 1000°C, it was clarified to show the bactericidal action for Escherichia coli.

Engineering the surface chemistry of carbon-based materials is of crucial importance in tuning their intrinsic properties, including electrical conductivity, wettability, electroactivity, adsorption potential, reactivity, physical and chemical stability. Intense research has recently focused on understanding the role of surface oxygen functional groups when carbon materials are in contact with an electrolyte or solvent in order to tailor and improve them for technological applications. For this purpose, their synthesis method and/or further oxidation treatments should be carefully selected, since they can substantially influence not only the oxygen content, but also the nature of the oxygen moieties, which could be decisive in determining the surface properties of the resulting material. The combined use of different chemical, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, provides unique and reliable information about the contribution of a specific oxygen-containing group in the surface (electro)chemistry of carbon-based materials. This paper provides a discussion of the role of oxygen heteroatoms in the surface electrochemistry of a carbon material as they relate to their influence on both its electroactivity and reactivity.

Carbon micro-coils (CMCs) with 3D-helical/spiral structures and coil diameters of orders were obtained by the metalcatalyzed pyrolysis of acetylene at 700-800°C. In this review, the preparation process, morphology, microstructure, properties, and some applications of CMCs are introduced and their future prospect is discussed. The as-grown CMCs have almost amorphous structure, but were graphitized by high temperature heat treatment with full preservation of the coiling morphology. The CMCs could effectively generate inductive electromotive force, inductive current and thus Joul's heat under the application of microwaves. The CMCs/elastic polymer composite elements showed high tactile/proximity sensing properties which are comparable to that of human skin. The CMCs are a possible candidate for electromagnetic wave absorbers, remote heating materials, visualization elements of microwaves, tactile/proximity sensor elements, micro-antenna, chiral catalysts, bio-activators or bio-deactivators, energy converters, etc.

In the paper, we prepared the carbon fibers/epoxy resin composites using modified carbon fibers by a new surface modification method named photo-oxygenation. Effects of the surface modification of carbon fibers on the properties of the composites and matrix resin have been studied through the estimation of color and dynamic viscoelastic properties of the composites. The obtained results are as follows.(1) Color and the dynamic viscoelastic properties of the composites change with carbon fibers' surface modified or not. So it is seen that the surface modification of reinforcing fibers changes not only the interphase but also the structure of matrix resin and its curing behavior.(2) The color properties and crosslinking density of the matrix resin are linearly related, so the color properties will be able to be applied for the quality control as curing estimation.

Electric double-layer capacitors based on the charge storage at the interface between a high specific surface area activated carbon electrode and an electrolyte solution have been developed, and are widely used as maintenance-free power source for IC memories and microcomputers. Following the production of small size capacitor of the capacitance up to 1F, middle size capacitor having the capacitance up to 100F were produced and applied to power sources combined with solar cell in traffic signal and so on. Recently, large size capacitors of the capacitance about 1500F are being developed for large power sources such as in HEV. However, the energy density of electric double-layer capacitors is smaller than that of batteries such as the lithium ion battery. To solve this problem, new electrolytes, electrode materials and the construction of the cells were developed. As a result, the energy density of available large device (1000-2000F) was enhanced to 6 Wh/l at power density of 800W/1 and expected to be larger in near future.

Recently astronomical observation revealed that optical properties of interstellar dusts in galaxies nearby our Galaxy shows gradual variation of optical properties closely related to their stage of galactic growth. The average interstellar extinction curves of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and our Galaxy are summarized with astronomical observations of artificial satellites. An extinction curve of SMC, the youngest of them, showed smooth feature from far UV to near IR. But that of our Galaxy, the oldest of them, showed a large hump peaked at 220 nm. In this paper we discussed evolution of carbonaceous dusts in galactic growth.With high resolution observation of IR spectrum near our solar system, a life of carbonaceous dusts were clarified. The carbonaceous dusts were formed in circumstellar space of carbon rich aged stars and then they were expelled into interstellar space to be interstellar dusts. After the long residence in interstellar space the dusts were condensed in a dark cloud to form a protostar. In aged stage of dusts there are at least three substages such as dark cloud stage, protostellar stage, T Tauri stage and so on. The spectral changes of their carbonaceous dusts in these stages were summarized.

Pyridinic nitrogen-containing carbon materials are expected to have excellent performance as electrodes and catalysts. Carbon materials containing only pyridinic nitrogen have been synthesized in recent years, and the use of two-fused-ring aromatic compounds as precursors enabled the synthesis of relatively inexpensive pyridinic nitrogen-containing carbon materials. However, a two-fused-ring aromatic compound such as isoquinoline (IQ) required a relatively high temperature (973 K) for carbonization, causing C–N bond cleavage, and the percentage of pyridinic nitrogen was relatively low: 52% of the N atoms are pyridinic. This study synthesized pyridinic nitrogen-containing carbon materials from six brominated IQs. The bromination of IQs lowered the carbonization temperatures to 673–873 K, which helped avoid the decomposition of the pyridinic nitrogen. Among these six precursors, the one with two bromine substitutions (1,4-dibromoisoquinoline) had the highest percentage of pyridinic nitrogen (65%) at 773 K. The factors that increase the percentage of pyridinic nitrogen are (1) avoiding the formation of a 1,10-phenanthroline-like structure during dimerization, (2) avoiding the formation of N–H and promoting the scission of the formed C–N in dimers formed after C=C coupling at bromine-substituted positions between precursors, and (3) forming a more ordered six-membered ring structure by the introduction of two or more highly reactive bromines.

Transparent antennas have attracted much attention because they can meet the demands of the Internet of Things (IoT) and fifth generation (5G) mobile communication technologies. From this point of view, intensive research and development has been carried out to produce materials with high optical transparency and low electrical resistance. Research on graphene transparent antennas is reviewed along with our experimental demonstration. The unique features of graphene as a material for transparent antennas are introduced and compared to the characteristics of metal-based and metal-oxide transparent conductors. The challenges involved in the fabrication of transparent antennas using graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are described. Fabrication techniques of transparent antennas (transfer and patterning methods) and techniques to decrease the sheet resistance of the graphene films (stacking and doping methods) are described. The performance of the CVD graphene transparent antennas we have fabricated are presented.

In order to get some fundamental informations related to a mechanism of carbonization, pyrolysis of the mono- substituted benzene derivatives (benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, aniline, anisole, benzyl alcohol, acetophenone, benzaldehyde and phenol) was studied by use of a flowing gas reactor at below 600°C.According to the initial temperature of decomposition, the thermal reactivities are arranged in the order as follow: ph-CHO>ph-OCH3>ph-NO2>ph-CH2OH>ph-COCH3 >benzene>ph-Cl>ph-NH2>ph-CH3>ph-OH. And the mechanism of the decomposition of the each derivative is suggested on the basis of the quantitative analysis of the products.

Suh-micron diamond powder was heat-treated and its machining pert ormance wax tested in the texturing process or fixed disk blanks. Comparison indicated a significant increase of up to some 30% in stock rein al. as well as a reduction of 5% in surlacc roughness over the corresponding diamond as untreated. Such improvement can be related to the et lect s of an incrased friability and thus in number or edges available I or the stock removal process. Scratch marks, on the other hand. were essentially eliminated as a result of the deposition of non-diamond carbon on the surfaces of diamond particles, so much as to leave only edge projection tips uncvoered.

X-ray dill faction technique, have widely been ftpplicd for crystal structure charactcniation of carbon materi-als and ga c useful information. Progresses, in computer. were remarkable. which made the measurement cI diffrac-tion intensities and their correction, on di fferent factors easier. It was pointed out, therefore, that the procedures for X-ray diffraction measurements, e to he revised so as to take into account of these progresses in computation. In the present paper, computer analysts of digital data of X-ray diffraction, for instance, determination of lattice constants and crystallite size of carbon materials (Gakushin method) using profile fitting technique and calculation of integral inten-sity in the case of estimation of graphititation degree P1 was reviewed. The measurement conditions to obtain a good digital diffraction data, the procedures of smoothing and intensity correction of diffraction profile were introduced.
