This paper discusses the problems of the Japanese translation of “Silent Spring” by Ryoichi Aoki.
It has been said that his translation has a lot of room for improving his translation. There are many simple mistranslations. In some places we can find the abbreviated or expanded expressions.
However, in some cases, the meaning of the original text is intentionally altered. For example, “authoritarian” is translated as “官庁”, “public officials” or “authorities”.
Any people can be an “authoritarian” figure if they have been “temporarily entrusted with power” such as dumping poisonous materials into a reservoir to kill the undesired fish, for example. It is painful to recognize such a fact. Therefore, he would make the officials responsible for such decision and try to exempt us, as non-officials, from the responsibility.
