National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) started to develop H-II launch vehicle in 1983 and succeeded in the 1st flight on February in 1994. Meanwhile, several troubles were experienced in the development of LE-7 which is the 1st stage engine of H-II. The LE-7 is a staged combustion cycle engine with high pressure and high Isp like SSME. Therefore, high delivery pressure and high performance were required for LH2 turbopump, which is the main key component, and caused several troubles in the development. This paper describes the development of LH2 turbopump containing the design description, the contents of some troubles and their counterplans. In addition, some activities to solve turbopump life and endurance will be introduced.

Idle spin phenomena were observed at rapid transient phase in liquid hydrogen pumps for rocket engines. Failure analyses were conducted and evaluation equations to estimate the shift of the operation point of the pump were derived in this paper. It was revealed that rapid fall of hydrogen flow rate resulted in decrease of pump efficiency which caused excessive temperature rise up to the saturation of the pump fluid.

The basic characteristics of the two-dimensional cavitating flow of liquid helium through a horizontal converging-diverging channel near the lambda point are numerically investigated to realize the further development and high performance of new multiphase superfluid cooling systems. First, the governing equations of the cavitating flow of liquid helium based on the unsteady thermal nonequilibrium multifluid model with generalized curvilinear coordinates system are presented, and several flow characteristics are numerically calculated, taking into account the effect of superfluidity. Based on the numerical results, the two-dimensional structure of the cavitating flow of liquid helium though horizontal converging-diverging channel is shown in detail, and it is also found that the generation of superfluid counterflow against normal fluid flow based on the thermo mechanical effect is conspicuous in the large gas phase volume fraction region where the liquid- to gas-phase change actively occurs. Furthermore, it is clarified that the mechanism of the He I to He II phase transition caused by the temperature decrease is due to the deprivation of latent heat for vaporization from the liquid phase.

液体水素は極めて密度が小さい(液体酸素の1/16)ため,液体水素供給ロケットポンプはかなり高速にする必要がある。この傾向は上段ロケットあるいは軌道変換用ロケットにおいて特に顕著となる。液体水素の粘性が小さく減衰作用が小さいため,高速運転時に過大な軸振動が生じ易い。軸振動の抑制はこの種のポンプの開発における困難な問題の一つである。SSMEやLE-5エンジンの液体水素ポンプの開発において過大な軸振動が発生している。筆者らは,ポンプ構造の選択により運転回転数を危険速度よりも低くする一つの設計方法を試みた。同ポンプは設計回転(50,000rpm)において,良好な軸振動特性を示した。この設計法は,LE-7高圧液酸ターボポンプに適用された。

The regions of cavity fluctuations in an inducer were investigated with three different types of housing : modified, original and straight. The region of rotating cavitation with modified or straight housing shifted to a higher flow rate range than that with original housing. Some results of visual observations suggested that the reversed flow aroud the tip of the inducer inlet is related to this phenomenon. The rotating cavitation velocity ratio seemed to approach 1.0 as the magnitude of shaft vibration increased. Another rotating cavitation was identified at a lower cavitation number than that at which attached cavitation occurred.
