The effects of moderate exercise between performing tasks on a word processor on task efficiency were investigated. The exercise was performed using a bicycle ergometer and the duration of exercise was 10 minutes. Two load strengths were used for moderate exercise : One was the strength at which a subject felt the most comfortable and the other was the estimated lactate threshold (LT) strength. Mean of comfortable strength was 50.0±20.8W and that of LT strength was 82.9±12.5W. The task performed on the word processor was to input a Japanese sentence for 10 minutes. The time to complete one sentence shown on the display was defined as "the completion time". "The completion time" was divided into "the input time", the time required to input words, and "the selection", the time required to select the correct kanji from the list. Moderate exercise had a good effect on the completion time, the completion time for both exercise conditions decreased compared to no exercise. On analysis we found that the completion time decreased because input time decreased.

我が国の65歳以上人口は2003年9月時点で総人口の19%であり,2015年には26.0%にのぼると予測されている.この高齢者人口の増加の影響は平均寿命の長命化の影響を受け,日常生活動作(Activity of daily living:ADL)水準の低い要介護度4や5などの,重度な介護を必要とする被介護者や,寝たきりの被介護者の増加につながると思われる.また,現在の高齢障害者の介護形態は,在宅療養の充実を目的とした事業展開を推進し,施設介護から在宅介護に移行していく方向にあるが,実際は,要介護度4,5の被介護者の半数以上が介護老人保健施設や特別養護老人ホーム等で介護を受けている状況である.さらに,家族による在宅介護能力を人口比率から見ると,65歳〜84歳の高齢者1人当りの成人介護適齢期女性(娘や嫁)の人口比率は,少子高齢化のために,1990年の1.298人から2005年には世界最低水準の0.77人,2015には0.588人と半減する.そのため,重度な介護を必要とする被介護者は在宅介護では限界をきたし,介護施設への入居が圧倒的に多くなることが予想できる.

Equipment to measure the surface hardness of the human body has been designed for the purpose of estimating muscle generating force from the physiological view point. The surface hardness is defined as the reaction force of the body surface under predetermined thrust displacement. The sensor described here is suitable for analysis of human motion and multipoint measurements because of its compactness. From the results of experiments on elbow joints, a relationship was found between the measured hardness and the joint torque. The results also showed that body surface hardness was a function of the joint angle. Moreover, it was shown that muscle forces could be estimated by a neural network when the hardness and joint angle were given.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a continual cycling exercise program on endurance and body mass index (BMI) in persons with residual type schizophrenia. Twenty-one inpatients (14 males and 7 females, 50.0±7.2 years of age, height of 161.4±9.4 cm, weight of 67.0 ±9.5kg, duration of illness : 23.8±8.6 years) participated in this study. The subjects were prescribed a cycling exercise program, and endurance and weight were assessed at the beginning, as well as at six months, twelve months, and twenty-four months after starting the program. Endurance was measured by the sub-maximal bicycle exercise test, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated as body weight in kilograms/(height in meters)^2. The exercise program consisted of 30 to 45 minutes of cycling once or twice per week. As a result, eleven subjects (7 males and 4 females, 51.5±8.5 years of age : exercise group) underwent cycling exercise regularly for twenty-four months ; seven subjects (4 males and 3 females, 49.7±5.7 years of age : control group) dropped out within six months ; three subjects were discharged from the hospital and discontinued participation in the study. The exercise group showed an increase in endurance after six months and a significant increase after twenty-four months (p<0.05), Concerning BMI, the exercise group showed a tendency to decrease ; however the control group showed an increase in BMI after twenty-four months. These results suggest that long-term and continual regul ar exercise is important for inpatients with residual type schizophrenia to increase their endurance. This study's findings indicate that a cycling exercise program is effective for such patients.
