This paper deals with the proposal of an electric-pneumatic hybrid drive system composed of an AC servomotor and a pneumatic cylinder type actuator, and its control methods. The rotational movement of the AC servomotor is transformed into the linear movement through a ball screw that is placed in the piston, and this hybrid drive system can be operated in the direction of gravitational force. Three control methods such as a pressure compensated control, a torque control and a hybrid control that combines both control methods are proposed from the view point of the reduction of the driving torque of the AC servomotor. The basic characteristics of the hybrid drive system are investigated by the experiment relating to the three control methods when the inertial mass moves vertically upwards and downwards during one cycle. Each control method is effective in reducing the driving torque of the AC servomotor and the views on the reduction of the driving torque of the AC servomotor in each control method are described.

By developing various electronic equipments with high performance, the dissipated power of electric chips used in those equipments has been increased. Therefore, it has been important to cool those electronic chips, and a liquid-cooling system has been employed for some electronic equipments. An Electro-Conjugate Fluid (ECF), which is one of functional fluids, has a remarkable property that a jet flow is generated between two electrodes when a high voltage is applied to the electrodes. By the use of this strong jet flow, a pump with simple structure, no noise and no vibration can be developed and a new liquid cooling system by ECF seems to be realized. In this study, to realize the liquid cooling system by ECF, an ECF-pump is proposed, in which four printed circuit boards are layered to make the pump size compact. The proposed pump is fabricated, and experiments are performed to investigate the basic characteristics of the pump. Furthermore, in the liquid cooling system with the proposed pump, experiments to cools a heat source are performed to investigate the possibility of achievement of the liquid cooling system by ECF.

In this study we aim to realize an actuator that is comparable with a natural muscle from a viewpoint of flexibility, the output force and the responses. In the 1st report we constructed the Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator protected by “a rolled film tube” with the high heat resistance and the high flexibility, and it is named “the unit cell”. In this report we constructed an actuator named “a motor unit” with the larger output force by bunching up 7 unit cells, and the characteristics of the motor unit are investigated by the experiments in which the motor unit is driven in Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM). The result of the experiments shows that the static characteristics of the output force and the displacement to the input pulse frequency in the motor unit near proportion relations in comparison with the unit cell still more and the output force increases almost 7 times as large as the unit cell. It is found out that the time constant of the motor unit becomes larger compared to that of the unit cell, and the power conversion efficiency falls when pulse width is extended to improve the time constant.

This paper deals with a new concept of an optical servo system and an experimental analysis on photostrictive ceramics for use as an optical actuator in the servo system. The optical servo system proposed here may be characterized by the introduction of an opto-hydraulic control valve into the system. The opto-hydraulic control valve can be operated by an optical actuator which is directly dirven by light irradiation. The photostrictive effect in PLZT ceramics, which is produced from the superposition of the photovoltaic effect due to light irradiation and the piezoelectric effect, is evaluated experimentally from the viewpoint of the applicability to a servo actuator. Experimental results show that the PLZT (3/52/48) ceramics produce a strain as large as conventional PZT ceramics, but that they have a very slow dynamic response of about 100 sec. The slow dynamic response is due to the time lag in the photovoltaic effect.
