This paper describes the instructional design to develop communication ability for students in the electrical engineering majors. It is based on the case of Fukuoka Institute of Technology which started new courses for communication skills in 2007. A series of communication education from the freshman year to the third grade is systematized, considering the developmental process of students' argumentation. In the classes, students continually learn dialogue and cooperation through various styles of discussion, debate, presentation and so on. The first introductory class of all is “Communication Theory I”, which is aimed at developing self-awareness and improving discussion skills for interpersonal relationship. In this course, students acquire skills to construct their arguments about the given issues and to evaluate others' presentation performances each other. To cultivate students' communication ability, education should not be closed in a class, but support system from departmental level is essential.

Although much has been discussed about argumentation in various academic fields, prior attempts to develop teaching method for argumentative skills have been inconclusive. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the process of how inexperienced students acquire argumentative skills in a community of practice, and to provide an instructional approach regarding characteristics of learners obtained by the experiments. 20 freshmen participated a four-week debate training and a series of tests. After the session, most of the 18 subordinate argumentative skills which were set for analytic schema were improved, compared with the pretest. However, skills such as “Reasonableness of grounds” “Numbering” “Labeling” were revealed difficult to learn without formal instructions. Further analysis of patterning arguments clarifies underperformance of some particular types of the participants. By discussing these results, the prospects of argumentative education for Japanese students are explored.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the communication education for students in the science and engineering majors. The main characteristic of the curriculum is the process of value and attitude changes of students by debate. It is effective to cultivate well-balanced manner and matter which take significant role in any communication. The lectures provide debate training to match the proficiency of the students in order to foster thinking ability step-by-step. In the department of electrical engineering of Fukuoka Institute of the Technology, the expert of the communication and the expert of the electrical engineering team-teach the course as one of the specialized subjects. This system provides both training of technique of constructing argument and professional assessment on their contents, which it calls “two wheels of one cart”. The lectures are organized to develop students' incentive to learn with ARCS model. The questionnaires show that the communication skills acquired through debates are applied in the scenes of the real problem solving. 90% of the students reply that the series of lectures are useful and produce satisfactory results. Therefore, the proposed education is confirmed to be effective to enhance the communication skills of students.
