Factors that affect college students' professional help seeking preferences were explored and an intervention was conducted to change their attitudes about help seeking. First, a questionnaire study was designed to examine how college students viewed psychiatric patients (perceived social distance), their self-stigma about receiving professional help, and their willingness to seek professional help. Undergraduate and graduate students (N=193) responded to questionnaires consisting of the Self-Stigma Scale, Social Distance Scale-Revised version (SDS-R) and Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPH-SF). Results were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling, which indicated that social distance positively affected self-stigma and self-stigma negatively affected help seeking preferences. Next, an intervention program was conducted for attitudes toward professional help seeking in 11 college and graduated students, which consisted of two sessions. In the first session (sixty minutes), the researcher gave basic information about mental illnesses and introduced the college counseling center as a helping resource. In the second session, researches helped each participant focus their coping strategies. Results indicated that the intervention did not reduce self-stigma regarding mental illnesses. However, the mean score of the participants in the Help Seeking Scale improved. Limitations and implications of this research are discussed.
