In recent years, aging of agricultural workers has progressed, attention is paid to ICT conversion of agriculture and Functional food with health maintenance effect. Raspberry contains a large amount of compounds that have a high health maintenance effect, which takes time and labor for cultivation. The purpose of this research is to construct an image processing system that recognizes color and position information in order to check whether harvesting of raspberries is possible under an indoor environment. As research contents, RGB values of colors of berries at various stages were calculated from spectral analysis results of berries and compared with actual fruit photos. We also classified colors in the image using machine learning and verified its accuracy.

Home oxygen therapy (HOT) is a medical treatment for patients suffering from severe lung diseases. Although a walk in an outdoor environment is recommended for the patients to keep physical strength, patients always have to carry a portable oxygen supplier which is not sufficiently light weight for the patients. Our ultimate goal is to develop a mobile robot carrying an oxygen tank and follows a foregoing patient in an urban outdoor environment. We have proposed a mobile robot with a tether interface to detect the relative position of the foregoing patient. In this paper, we improve mobile platform mechanisms and active wheels to maximize the negotiating step height, and to allocate sufficient luggage area in the main body carrying an actual oxygen tank. The following control algorithm is also improved and demonstrate its effectiveness in an outdoor following experiment.

In this paper we propose a new type educational program for Mechatronics design which contributes to develop the physical sense and problem solving ability of the students who study Mechatronics design. For this program we provide a new handicraft kit of 4-wheeled car which is composed of inexpensive and commonplace parts, and the performance of the assembled 4-wheeled car is sensitive to its assembly arrangement. And then we implemented this program with the handicraft kit to the university freshmen, and verified its effectiveness, and report the results of the program.

In this paper, we report a case study of project-based learning (PBL). PBL aims to allow students to experience collaboration across disciplines. The class comprised several teams, each of which consisted of students belonging to different departments. First, the students learned biomimetics prior to PBL and attempted to develop new commercial goods with the knowledge gained. The teams could make full use of the university’s facilities, such as 3D printers, to produce objects precisely. The students’ final results included the development of a propeller for hydropower or a drone. The students evaluated themselves using a rubric that we specifically developed for the class. The evaluation confirmed that the students became aware of the need and importance of teamwork.
