This study investigated the effects of full-force bicycle pedaling exercise on deep body temperature and exerted power while wearing kendo-gu with a mask and face shield in a hot and humid environment. The subjects were eight male university kendo athletes. All subjects wore kendo-gi and kendo-gu but the experiments were conducted under two conditions: one with the subjects wearing a mask and face shield and the other without a mask and face shield. The experiments were conducted in a climate chamber with the WBGT (wet bulb globe temperature) set at 28. Intermittent, full-force pedaling exercises using a bicycle ergometer with a 15-minute rest period in between exercises. Changes in core body temperature during rest and the rate of decrease in exerted power during the two full-force pedaling exercises were examined. The results showed that wearing a mask and face shield caused an increase in deep body temperature during the resting period between exercises, and a decrease in exerted power during the post-rest exercise. These results suggest that wearing masks and face shields in a hot and humid environment in kendo training may increase the risk of heat stroke and affects the quality of training.

This “Jigen” school was founded by Togo-chui about 1600 A. D.The curriculum of this Jigen-school consists of principles, the firm grassing of wood sword, the quickness of the motion, the skills to beat, the dignity, and gazing at the opponent. In this treatise the quickness of the motion will be dealt with, and the way to get this skill will also be dealt with.To get the quick skill we must be accustomed to the distance between us and the opponent, and the quick motion of legs and hands. Further-more we must be innocent, must take to and a half steps within a pulse, when we attach the opponent. It is important to “Shout”, too. It is necessary for us to have half a breath left, and use various kinds of skills according to the movement of the opponents.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lunge training on the striking ability of kendo players. Twelve university kendo players were assigned to either a training (n=6) or a control (n=6) group. The subjects in the training group performed lunge training three times a week for four weeks. After this training period, the pull-speed of the left leg during striking (p<0.01), the forward step distance of the right foot, maximal ground reaction force, maximal leg extension power, and the greatest leg split distance (p<0.05) all increased significantly in the training group. This study demonstrated that lunge training was effective in increasing the striking ability (i.e. increasing the pull-speed of the left leg after a strike) of kendo players.
