Gay characters in films are more and more prominent these days. The biases against gay people are gradually decreasing. So it is time to think about films from homosexual points of view. It has been said that American films are potentially homosexual, although they hide their homosexuality under the veils of heterosexism. As closeted homosexuality is an essential part of most American films, the one way to see American films is to assume man-to-man relationship to be a kind of homosexuality. The Shawshank Redemption can easily be said to be a beautiful love story between the two male prisoners Andy and Red. The Shawshank Redemption is, like other prison films, filled with homosexual connotations such as sexual violence and male rape. Under the harsh circumstances the two male prisoners create a loving relationship. But their skin colors and their social classes are so different that we tend to overlook their homoerotic desire. In this thesis, their homosexuality would be examined.

Zac Efron, a two-time winner of MTV Movie Award for Best Shirtless Performance, objectifies his bodies in movies such as That Awkward Moments (2014), Neighbors (2014), and Dirty Grandpa (2016). Although bodies of Hollywood male stars have been portrayed as spectacles since the beginning of movies, representations of Efron’s bodies are somewhat different from those of other macho stars. The movies in which he shows his naked body are comedies on male friendships. These relationships are not gay ones. However, the characters are conscious of gay men and portray male relationships as close to homosexuality. Therefore, Efron’s body could be shown as symbolizing homoerotic desires. Moreover, the friendships in these movies lack male dominance and aggressiveness that ordinarily characterize male buddy movies. Efron appears to be enjoying his body and looks rather cute and innocent. Male audiences can easily identify themselves with him owing to these attributes. They could be muscle men without being like “wolves.” His body could be said to be a symbol of a new kind of male body of the 21st century.

Edward Norton's two films, American History X (1998) and Fight Club (1999) , portray his transformation from a sensitive man into a macho man. Both films spectacularly feature his naked body. His muscled bodies seem to be a key to understanding these two films. Masculine body typically represents violence and domination. In these films, as Norton builds up his muscle, he grows to be a masculine man. But in both films, his masculinity eventually causes a riot, and he comes to realize the defeat of masculinity in the end. Ironically, what two films are implying seems to be the problem of excessive masculinity. Both films are the memorable films in terms of masculine crisis and recovery.
